April 30, 2023

As many of you know, H sustained a fall on Wednesday, April 26 that caused a head injury. My sister, Annie, was fortunately able to be with him and has medical experience as a nurse, which helped her to provide critical information to medical personnel.

He was taken to the hospital and quickly assessed with a CT scan, which revealed a subdural hematoma. A craniotomy was performed.

H was able to be extubated on Thursday, post-surgery. Since then, there has been additional swelling and difficulty breathing.

It was discovered, under monitoring, that H’s heart was pausing, and a temporary pacemaker was placed. A permanent pacemaker will be placed once he is more stable.

Terry, his wife, and our sweet mom, is by his side in Florida, at the Level 1 trauma center near where the accident happened. We are all so grateful for her deep experience as a nurse that allows her to communicate with the attentive staff there. Her many years of caring for medically fragile people have equipped her well for the current situation.

We know that many of you are interested in knowing specifically how to pray. I will post updates as they are available here so that my mom can focus on care and presence where she is.

Good news:

Bleeding has stopped.

Immediate prayer needs:

H was intubated again today, as breathing became difficult. He is on a ventilator. This will allow him to rest and not struggle with breathing.

H is currently in a coma.

Swelling in his brain has increased and is being monitored.

There is fluid in the right side of his chest (lung).

There is now risk for new blood clots elsewhere in his body. This cannot be prevented with medication until the drain from his head is removed.

Hopefully the drain can be removed tomorrow.

A strategy that may be used today is to tap the fluid in his lung and place a “cage” on his left side to catch developing clots until then.

The hope today is that the swelling will reduce and he can regain some of the functions he had a few days ago.

When conscious, H has been disoriented, which is frustrating for him. Peace and calm are needed for his heart and mind.

Thank you for holding space for H and all of us while we ask for total restoration and healing.
