Beautiful Ashley, I saw you tonight at the competition and you were so gorgeous. Congratulations on winning Miss Congeniality!!! I am not surprised at all about that! We (my daughter and I) were there because Ashlee R. is her best friend, so we cheered for her, too. But what a surprise and such a treat to see you there. You handled yourself so well on stage with much poise and beauty. You did a great job! I hope you heard us cheering for you. Congratulations again! Love and hugs to you and your family.

Ashley you are AWESOME!!!! I loved reading your guestbook entry and your update. Be sure and give your mom a hard time for not updating for me. I cannot believe that you are fixing to be 16!?!?!?! How time flies. I can speak for your parents in that it is very hard to watch you grow up. My "baby" Hayden is 18 and fixing to graduate from high school. WE think of you guys often and it is great to hear that life is back to "normal" for you all. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more.

Hi Ashley. Just read the update and I'm so glad to hear you are doing well. I keep looking for you here at "The Jude" but must be missing you. I read about you in Reader's Digest and have showed everyone I know the article and picture. I do have to say that the picture does not do you justice - you are far more beautiful than the picture. You are truly an awesome young lady and God does have a very special purpose for you. I so look forward to what He is going to do through you. You have such a sweet spirit and I have always known from the beginning when you first came here that you were going to be special. I remember telling you when your hair was about to fall out that you were going to be a beautiful girl without hair because your beauty came from the inside. The same goes for your leg - you are right to say that it doesn't matter how your leg looks. God allowed this to happen for a purpose. The scar on your leg is a wonderful ministry and witnessing tool. God doesn't waste anything. Please tell your mom, dad, and Tyler hello for me and I hope to see you next time you are here. Love to all. Jana P.S. It is so wonderful to see how supportive you are of Tyler. A lot of sisters wouldn't be that excited about what their brother (or sister) is doing. May you always be that close in appreciation. Jana

Sooo I just totally read about you in Reader's Digest, and that's pretty cool. I'm so happy for you. Even though I've never met you I've always been impressed with your spirit (in all senses of the word) via this journal. I hope y'all update soon so we can know more about how things are going...although I guess Reader's Digest basically did that.

Okay Girls, I need an update!!!! What's the latest? I can't wait to hear! Rebecca started second grade yesterday. The first day was 1/2 day and today is her first full day. She was very excited about having a locker for the first time! It's those little things that keep us smiling!!!!

We are getting all the plans in order for Miss Youth Personality 2007. I have decided that this will be my last year to chair the committee. You'll have to let me know if you want to be involved as our "honorary" or if you want to go for the "other crown"! We'd love to have you either way.

I hope you all had a wonderful summer. Tell my buddy,Mr. Tyler, I want an update on him, as well! I hope to see a new journal entry REALLY soon, Donna! (my attempt at a subtle hint!)

Love,

Ashley,
Since first meeting you 6 1/2 years ago when we were so blessed to become your neighbors, we were then awe-inspired by your maturity even at that age. It has been a blessing for us to watch you blossom into the most caring, beautiful young lady and to see you triumph over adversity. Your words of inspiration in the journal entry are a true testimony to your awesome faith, and we only wish others, young people and adults alike, could face hard times with the same conviction that you and your family do. Our love and prayers are with you as you have surgery tomorrow. Once you're home, we look forward to a chick-flick night and a time to catch up.

Miss Ashley,
I didn't think I could ever be more proud of you than I already am.... but you got me again! Your words, like your mother's, are so heartfelt and beautiful that you bring me to tears. (You know me well enough to know that's not really hard to do!!!) I know deep in my heart that God is so very proud of you and the example you have been to everyone you meet. You have shown us that with "the rain" comes much growth. You will always be my hero! You were the first St. Jude child I had ever known personally. You and your mother introduced me to the Caringbridge world where I have become a regular! God has certainly used you and your victory over cancer to teach us grace and dignity under fire! I am blessed beyond words to call you, your mom, your dad and Tyler my dear friends. I will be thinking of you and praying for all of you next week. I love you dearly!

Donna, I really think you need to write that book! Hey, I'll organize the book signings and the receptions that go along! You are a true friend and a beautiful example of a godly mother and wife. I am so thankful for your friendship. I'll be in touch next week! Tell my buddy Tyler I said hello! Love and kisses to you all.

Good morning Miss Ashley. I saw your picture in the paper this morning and you are so beautiful. But I always knew that from the first time I ever met you. You are a beautiful young woman inside and out. It has been an honor to get to know you and your precious family. Keep that smile on your face. God has great things in store for you young lady. I'll try to catch up with all of you the next time you are here at St Jude. My love to all of you.

Ashley,
I cannot believe your picture. You are so pretty but I had to look twice to make sure it was you. Your smile is the same and that's how I knew. Just reading thru the journal sounds like you are doing great. I am so glad.
I plan on coming back several times and catching up on the last 4 years. I am back on chemo . My cancer came back and it's Stage 4 in the heart sac. It is the same type of breast cancer that I had 5 years old. I was a 5 year and 11 day survivor. I was rediagnosed Jan. 6. So, I know that you and your family will pray for me. Wednesday is my 3rd chemo treatment. I will be having a CT scan to make sure the cancer has not spread anywhere else and if the other 2 treatments have helped with the cancer. If he doesn't feel that they are working then he's changing my drugs.
Well, you take care and enjoy Spring Break. I'll never forget my little Rainbow from Catherdal of Praise. I can't wait to see what God has in store for you in the future.
Tell Tyler, mom and dad that I said hi!

Ashley I have to agree with your mom, YOU ROCK! Although I have known that for some time now. I know from a mom's perspective that it does our heart good to here that our children are drawing their strength from God no matter what the circumstance. Please know that you touched my heart today with your gentle reminder that our plans and God's plans are not always the same. Hope you had a great birthday! Love ya!

Congrats on the article in Woman's World Magazine. You look terrific and I believe that your article will give many other children and young adults hope as they face challenges in the future. I was working with Kindergarteners the other day, they were learning about the Beatitudes, and one of the children asked how God wanted them to help--keeping it simple, we talked about giving a hug, bringing food for the food drive, etc.. But Ashley, you are living out those Beatitudes in a much larger way and following God's plan for you! May God's peace always be with you.

Garretts,
I am singing some praises! I knew everything was fine cause when I see Ashley, all I can think of is how radiant and beautiful she is; from the inside out! I missed you girls by just a few minutes at the hospital but the sweet lady at the front desk was giddy telling me that the scans were good! She told me she was a Dr. Garrett patient but I can't remember her name. I will be praying for an easy visit next week - for all of the family! I will talk with you soon!

Good update. I hope a few more people now "get it"! It's hard for me to update our website, too, telling of how great our life is and then in the same moment reflect on how tough of a time our St. Jude and other CB friends are having. It's so NOT fair.

We return to St. Judes in Jan. 2007. That seems so far away. We now return every six months! Wow. Stressful at the same time!

Hi Donna and Ashley,

I've come to your site before, (couldn't forget your daughter's beautiful face!)not sure if I've signed your guestbook?

We are another St. Jude family. It's always so nice to meet other families in the battle.

I'm so blessed and encouraged about Ashley, God is so GOOD! You journal so well, and bring glory to the Lord in how you share you heart. I enjoyed reading this update!

I will remember to pray for your sister now. Yes, thank GOD for the "HOPE" we have in the Lord, and one day, (very soon I believe) we will all be reunited! What a day that will be...

Hope you have a great trip to New York! Sounds like a "divine appointment" to me.

With hope,

Ashley - You may not remember me - I am one of your weekend nurses from the second floor. Anyway - hope things are better. I admire you so much for all the courage and strength you have. You are such an example to so many young people. You have stared real adversity in the eyes and overcome it! Most teens "think" they have problems. You know the occasional pimple flare-up or a bad hair day (you have had plenty of your own "no" hair day's uh?). What I am trying to say is to keep that chin up and keep smiling that gorgeous smile. You are a witness for God and his ability to do wonderful things here on earth. I think about you often and I will pray that all this with your prothesis will resolve. Many people might think - just replace it! I know what you went through the first time trying to heal and it is not a "just replace it" type thing. Not like having an appendectomy uh?

Hope you enjoyed New York - It is an extremely incredible place!!! Tell you mom hello.

I was out of town for the weekend (at a Talent Competition for the Mid-South Fair) and just checked my email and your website. I'm sure you know that I am praying for only good things - total healing and no surgeries! Donna, there is no need for you to apologize or explain when asking for prayers for Ashley. Right now I am sitting here with tears in my eyes, most of all, for all you had to go through, but also tears of joy to see how He has brought you out of it each and everytime. God is so Good and He has made you strong, you and your whole family. I believe He will once again carry you through this episode too. I pray that the pain will be gone in no time and that the Healing will be complete. You are such an inspiration to many of us! May you have a wonderful trip to NY!

Ashley, You are a true inspiration to everyone who meets you! You and your family are in my prayers. Never forget that "by His stripes we are healed!" And He took a stripe for just this particular event in your life. He is your Healer! He is the great Physician! Stand strong! He will be glorified! I went to New York one time on a business trip! Ok, I decided I need to check on you - I haven't heard back from your mom and as I can see you guys have been quite busy. Have you already been to New York or is it next week. I am really jealous - I have never been to New York. I hope you are feeling better and I am so sorry that you slipped while helping us with football camp. You were so helpful and we really appreciate it. I hope your leg is better and I will continue to pray for you to heal and not be in pain. You are so sweet and OK the secret is out - you really know how bad my kitchen duty skills are - you saw it first hand. I will be praying for you each day. Thanks for being such a sweet young lady and for the inspiration that comes from just being around you.

Keep your head up girl! You and your family know better than most about the healing power of Christ. It is He who formed you and He can "re-form" you again. Good Morning Ashley,
Just want you to know that we are praying for you that God will take away all of the pain in your leg, and that when the doctors see you this week your leg is healed from anything that might have happened during your fall. God sees your heart and knows your desire to go to New York. I pray that His face will smile upon you this week and that He will wrap His loving arms around you. Keep that beautiful smile that you always have when I see you at church. May God Bless you and your family. Tell your parents that I am praying for them also. (Love Ya, Rita)

Good morning Ashley. Sorry to hear about your fall last week. I can't imagine the pain you must be having. While reading the journal I kept thinking about what strong young lady you are. Things will work out and all will be okay. Sometimes Satan likes to stir up our emotions and place obstacles in our way. Just remind him that YOU are a child of God and he can't touch you. You are protected by God's grace and mercy.

You are in my prayers. I'll be sure to check back in on you to see what Wednesday brings. Square your shoulders and keep your chin up. God has it all under control.

Donna,
You are in my prayers too. God is taking care of you all. He understands every detail and will never leave you (or Ashley). Keep holding His mighty hand.

Trusting Him,

Hey Ashley. I know this is not the way you wanted to start high school but if this is the best Satan can throw at you, you just tell him to "bring it on". We know that this is nothing that took God by surprise and that He can more than handle it. You have come too, too far to let this get you down. Just remember all that God has done for you and through you and that "this too shall pass". I love all of you and I'll look for you on Wednesday. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. Love ya girl. Keep that head up and that beautiful smile on your face.

Hi Ashley and Family - It is good to hear about your busy summer - all the usual things families do. Ya'll sound so busy. I agree with your mom - all the everyday things seem so minor after going through what you have experienced. It is more important to take time for each other and treasure each and every moment.

Please let your mom and dad know that we have a new grandson, Tucker William Mickel. He was born May 18th. We now have Taylor (7 in August), Addison (19 months) and Tucker. Emilee's husband, Brian, is Iraq - so please pray for his safety as well as that of the other troops. Bekkah has returned to work at the hospital here (post partum and the nursery) after having Tucker. Her husband, Jason, is a fireman here on Lady's Island.

We are moving to Columbia, SC today. It's about two hours away from Beaufort - I am up to my eyeballs in boxes right now.

I better get busy - the movers will be here in about two hours.

I love you all so much. God truly has blessed us all.

Love,
Sherry

Just a quick note to say hello and congratulations on all of your accomplishments! As I was reading the last few entries, one of my favorite songs popped in my head because it reminds me of you. The name of it is "Masterpiece in Progress" by Jeff Steinberg. He was raised Jewish and became a Christian in early adulthood. Anyway, he has been severely physically handicapped since birth and his songs often speak of overcoming struggles. You and your family are a testimony of that! And you are definitely a Masterpiece in Progress!

Hello Garretts,
My first question is..."Who is that young lady in the picture?" It cannot be "little" Ashley Garrett! What a gorgeous young lady you are - inside and out! Ashley, I am so very proud of you and all of your accomplishments. And I LOVE the fact that you don't like the camping. I'm with you all the way on that one. A Holiday Inn in a remote area is "roughing it" enough for me! Mr. Tyler sounds like he's got things right where he needs them as well! I fully expect to see him playing pro "something" on TV one day! I am so glad to hear that life is good for your family. You certainly deserve to celebrate in the good times! Ashley and Donna, let's REALLY try and find a time this summer to get together. Also, we are planning anniversary celebrations for the 150th Mid-South Fair and the 40th Miss Youth Personality this year and we want you to be a part of the festivities. Have a great week at camp and I hope to see y'all soon!

To the Garretts,
You have a very wonderful and special family and you have every right to express just how "blessed" you are. Ashley you are a beautiful young woman, (just like your mom, aunt, and grandmother). Donna, thank you for taking the time to update, I still check on your family through your journals. Ashley's was the first caringbridge site I ever visited, grandpa told me about it a church. I must confess I have become a "caringbridge junkie", but I can't think of a better way to stay in touch and become a prayer warrior for those battling this terrible disease. Ashley, I am so glad God is giving you the desires of your heart.

Hi Donna, I too saw your CB site mentioned on Jake's site. I also have a little boy who is a patient at St. Jude. His name is Cole. The Raborn's are very special to us, as they were the first family we met when Cole was diagnosed. Our son's were in surgery at the same time and we met that very day. God has blessed us in so many different ways but one of the most spectacular is crossing our path's with Jake and his loving family. I have a strong faith in my Savior Jesus, but even still I have those "down" kinda days and today was one of them....but God led me to your journal entry and he reminded me "it's NOT about me". I read Rick Warren's book a few years ago, but it truly touched me. Thank you for touching my life today, even though you had no idea you were :) And the picture of your daughter is beautiful!

A little poem for Ashley... ( I'm in Dr. Seuss mood)
A normal week for me, you see
I went to school and watched T.V.
I even had a cavity
That I got filled by your dad-dy.
But Ashley Garrett...not the same
Right now she's cheering for a game!
And everyone...no need to fear
She just found out her scans are clear!!!

Hey guys! Thank yo uso much for signing Stanton's guestbook. I know you are one that is faithful to check on us and pray. I am so glad to hear Ashley's scans were clear. It seems just like yesterday that we would all be loading up our wagons and eggcrates to go inpatient for chemo. I am so thankful that God had our paths to cross even in the most unfortunate of situations. I never thought there would come a day when I would miss those inpatient stays at St.Jude but the day is here. We were talking about you guys the other day at Sunday lunch at Jeff's grandmother's. Hey Garretts,

I know you can't see me so you'll have to take my word that I am doing the "Praise God - Happy Dance"!!!!!!! I tried to hold off but I had to check before I went to bed and I am so glad I did. (Mind you, I was not worried one bit. I just wanted to celebrate with you!) Miss Ashley, you are so well loved by two wonderful parents, a fantastic little brother and a host of people all over. What a special gift from God you are! Now I will wait to hear about cheerleading! God bless all of you and I hope you sleep like babies on a full tummy!!!!! LET'S HAVE A CELEBRATION!!!!!!!!!!

Much Love,
Melinda

P.S. I have to tell you that this morning some ladies stopped by my house. They were going door to door sharing Bible verses and witnessing. I invited them in and by the time they left they had "Ashley Garrett" written down and were praying for you all day!

Donna, thanks for the update. It was so good talking with you last week. We will pray and believe for a good report. Just know that you all are continuously in our prayers. Hopefully, the girls and I will make it to Memphis this summer. Take care.

Ashley,
I am always thinking about you and praying for you. It is hard to believe that you are so grown up. What happened to that little first grade girl?
