Missing you every day and on this 11th year in Heaven. I will celebrate your memory and all the years I was able to cherish you. I know you are with me today as well, my Angel. Sending hugs to heaven xoxo
Love Momma

Feb. 27, 2015

Time has passed faster than I realized. My sweet pea, my Angel, Melissa, has been in heaven 10 years. Hard to believe sometimes. I found this poem/letter. I did not write it, but it says it well...Letter to Heaven
I am writing you this letter to up above to tell you how much I miss you with all of my heart and love.
I do not know why you had to go, it just wasn’t fair.
I am left with this sorrow, sometimes too much to despair. It is hard to not touch you; it is hard to not see you. I wish so much to hear your voice …JUST ONE MORE TIME. I hear you whisper inside my thoughts. I feel you around me. I know you live on through those lives you have touched.
I know someday I’ll see you again.
In my heart I’ll hold you close
And keep you safe until then.
Keep sending me signs.
Always remembered, always loved.
From your loved ones you watch over from your world above.
Miss you with all my being Melissa! Sending my hugs and love to heaven!

It's hard to believe that it is reality... It will be 6 years this Sunday, February 27th, 2011 that Melissa left us to become an angel in Heaven. How lucky I feel to have had her in my life for her 12 years. I only wish she was here with us still. I miss her spunky and fun attitude. She enjoyed life, family, friends, people, animals and so much more. Her smile lit up any room.

My beautiful little girl, I love you so much and miss you deeply. Once again, you are with Gamma, Grandpa, Grandma Ellen, Uncle Eddie, your Great Aunts and many others who have left us. Since you cannot be here with me, I am happy you are with all of them. I send my love, hugs and kisses to you to the Heavens. xoxo
All my Love,
Momma

Hi All-
I know it's been a while... life has kept me busy. But I just wanted to pass along some information to anyone who is interested in the get together that Jillian is having in Memory of Melissa's 5th year in Heaven. If you are interested in joining her group that day just get in touch with Jillian or contact me and I will put you in contact with Jillian. Thanks!!
All my Love to all of you.
It will be 5 years on February 27th that my precious Angel has gone with the Angels.

Here is the message that Jillian posted on Facebook:

I know it's been a while since I've got something going around here but as most of you may know the fifth year anniversary is slowly approaching. This year February 27th falls on a Saturday, meaning it may be easier to get a bigger outcome of people to come visit the cemetery together.

I'm thinking if everyone could go sometime in the afternoon, then attend the 5'o clock mass together at St. Joseph 's church in Bogota , NJ where Melissa grew up. Then possibly go out for pizzs or something depending on how many people would want to participate this time around, same as last time as far as bringing balloons and messages to send up.

I will also soon be posting a link in a message for a Relay For Life team that will help benefit cancer research, my team will be raising money in memory of Melissa.

Thanks!

Jillian

Dearest Melissa...
Two years ago today, you became my angel. In my memory you will always stay, sadly missed day after day. Gone are the days we used to share, but in my heart you will always be there. If only one more day I could hold you. Comforting words from others mean well, but the reality of not having you by my side hurts more than any can imagine. You are so precious and so special. I miss your touch, your jokes, your Love, your hugs, your kisses, your face, your smile......I hold on to the memories we shared and treasure them deepley in my heart and mind....My Love for you reaches to the Heaven. With Love, Hugs and Kisses, Forever and Always... Momma

The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemes; thou annointest my headwith oil; my cup runneth over Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever.

Hi All...
I know it's been a while...but I have put off the wedding plans, but we went ahead with the move.
Me and Anthony have moved to Longmont Colorado. We drove across country on August 11th and arrived on the 14th. We took Melissa's guinny PIG-chip, and the sole surviving fish that she had picked out-a silver dollar fish named slim shady, and both dogs, Luther and Chow-chow. It was an experience, but we all made it and are doing well in our new place in Colorado. My next step besides going thru all these boxes is to gain employment. Wish me luck and prayers. Anthony started his new school on Aug. 23rd and is loving the new surroundings and new people he meets. He has already made a place for himself at the batting cages down the block!
Anyway, I will stop here for now.
Please keep us in your prayers.
xo
With Luv,
Patty

Hi All...
Just a little update on some exciting news...
Tom and I are officially engaged!
He gave me a ring on the Spirit of NY. He was actually planning to give it to me on the Helicopter ride that we were going to take prior to the dinner cruise, but the rain cancelled the flight. Just as well, it is still as exciting! We are planning a September wedding and Anthony will be part of the ceremony...we are going to give him a ring also.
Please surround us with your prayers and blessings!

Friday, May 19th:
I added the pictures from today. Mr. Ferlise dug the hole and placed the plaque as moments of silence were given in Melissa's Memory.
Thank you all for sharing this with me.
_______________________________________

Hi All....
I received word tonight from Mr. Ferlise...the Memorial Plaque is going to be put down in front of the Bogota High School Tomorrow, May 19th!!! Just one day before her would be 14th Birthday! The students have a field trip, but will be back around 2:30 for a small ceremony as the plaque is being laid down.
I want to thank all the students, faculty, for giving Melissa a Memorial at the High School. And, also to the Ferlise family for helping with setting the plaque in cement and placing it into the ground.
I know Melissa will be shining down on all of us as the plaque is placed in her Memory.
I finally was able to put some photos of the presentation of this plaque. Take a look, I will probably be replacing them soon with some new ones from tommorrow's presentation.

On Saturday, I plan to visit the cemetary for her birthday and send up some balloons. Remember....you can all send Melissa a balloon for her birthday with a message attached from where ever you are!!! Drop me a note afterward!!!

With Love, hugs & Prayers,
Patty

Hi All...
Thank you for all the Mother's Day greetings that were sent my way! We celebrated at a Hilton Brunch with Tom's family.

Melissa's would be 14th birthday is this upcoming Saturday, May 20th. Maybe you can help celebrate her birthday with us by sending up a balloon with a message attached from where ever you are!!

The High School is setting the plaque in her honor in a cement wedge. Mr. Ferlise is helping with that task. I am hoping for it to be finished this Friday so that it will be down for her Birthday.

Please send extra prayers right now to Dakota.

Hi All...

A Mass will be held today in Melissa's Memory at St. Joseph's Church in Bogota at 7 PM.

Anthony and I were also asked to be up at the High School at 9 am this morning for a gathering with the 7th and 8th grade classes. They presented a Memorial plaque for Melissa. One will be displayed in front of the school and the other was given to me. Angelique, her best friend, helped to place down the plaque and the Principal read a poem.
Thank you to all of you who have been sending us cards, emails and phone messages of comfort. :-)

It was one year ago today that my precious angel left me for heaven.
The Memorandum (Compliments of My Mother from Florida)in the Record Newspaper will read:

MELISSA Kathleen Ragusa
5/20/92-2/27/05

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, GOD HAD
TAKEN YOU TO HEAVEN. YOU LEFT
US WITH MANY MEMORIES TO SHARE,
THEY WE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.
YOU ARE OUR SHINING STAR.
YOU LIVE WITHIN OUR HEARTS.
WE ALL LOVE & MISS YOU OUR SWEET
ANGEL MELISSA.
LUV & MISS U, MOMMA, ANTHONY,
GAMMA, POP-POP, Grand-Pa, AUNTS KASSY,
NAY-NAY, DEBBIE, UNCLES
BRIAN, JOE & COUSINS, Family and Friends.

(on back of Mass card)
Togetherness
Death is nothing at all-I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be the household word it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was: there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well.
Nothing is past: nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as before-only better, infinitely happier and forever we will all be one together with Christ.

With Love, Hugs and Prayers,
Patty

Hi All....
I have been extremely busy lately....some things never change.
Anthony is graduating 6th grade this year. He has his sixth grade dance tonight and other upcoming graduation activities. Next year he will be going to St. Josephs and we are both happy about that! And, for the first time, I will be one of the class Mom's for Anthony's class! I had been one of the class Mom's for Melissa in the past...Anthony's class always had their fill of Moms and was hard to get in.

I will be leaving on June 13th (my 39th Birthday) until the 15th to go to Washington DC for the CureSearch Gold Ribbon Days. I can't wait and I am very excited about this!
Gold Ribbon Days is an advocacy and awareness program for childhood cancer. They will pre-arranged meetings with Members of Congress. I have already been contacted by Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger's office and I have a meeting with them so far! Melissa had the chance to meet him when she went to DC on a trip with the Sunshine Kids. Cure Search actually sets up the meetings and I am hoping to meet with some of the NJ representatives. I have written to all of them in anticipation of them attending the event. I will get to tell my story in hopes that it puts them in favor of passing the bills that will help with funding for research. CureSearch Gold Ribbon Days brings together childhood cancer patients, families, survivors, advocates and health care professionals from across the nation for this purpose.
You can also help by writing letters to your representatives in congress. The Cure Search website makes this very easy for you to do. They have the templates for the letters and they will automatically email them for you to your State officials. They will also periodically email you the bills that are up for voting. Go to:

http://www.curesearch.org

Please help write letters...I know up till now, it has not helped Melissa, but it can help all of the future children waiting for a cure. At least you can write one in Memory of Melissa.

Please continue to pray for all of my friends and family members affected by cancer, especially the following friends and family:

My Aunt Josie (going through chemo right now)
My Father,Tom (has Leukemia)
Dakota Gay www.caringbridge.org/sc/dakota
David Fitting www.carigbridge.org/fl/david

Hi All...
Today is Melissa's would-be 13th Birthday....
She celebrates in heaven as we celebrate the day here on earth.
My sisters had paid for a Memorandem in Memory of Melissa in today's newspaper. I uploaded it in the photo's section for all of you to see.
I know many of Melissa's friends will be going to the cemetary after school....Me, Anthony and my friends and family will be going at 5 pm. Jennifer ordered a cake with her face on it.
Please say some extra prayers for us, it is not the easiest of days...especially for me and Anthony.
Last night, there was a Memorial for all who passed away at Hackensack Medical Center, presented by Pastoral Care. I attended it with Kassy, MaryJane, Susan, Jennifer & Anita. I was able to say a few words about Melissa in her Memory and I read a poem that her Aunt Debbie wrote and copywrighted for her:

My Sweet Melissa
© Debra A. Battaglia (Melissa’s Aunt Debbie in Florida)

Born to a world of warmth,
My Sweet Melissa

Not knowing if there will be love,
With a smile as big as your heart,
My Sweet Melissa

So strong and full of life,
The world would get so cold,
An illness came when you were not that old,
My Sweet Melissa

Your body and mind will not always be,
Our memories we have will always be there,
My Sweet Melissa

My dreams can only last a night,
My hopes and wishes can last forever,
They will always be for,
My Sweet Melissa,
My Sweet Melissa….

Please continue to pray for the following friends and family:
Aunt Josie
My Father, Tom
Dakota Gay
David Fitting
Brittany Graves
Krysten Petrowski
Johnathan Viaud
David Cobel

With Love, Hugs & Prayers,
Patty

Hi All......
I am sorry I have not updated in a long time.....It has been very hard to do this lately. I have a hard time going to Melissa's site and all my good friend's sites (although I want too). Things have been difficult for me and Anthony lately. However, I am trying to make the best out of it. I felt myself feeling lower and lower, but I needed to pull myself up. And, I feel like I am on my way.
I ordered Melissa's grave marker. I am having her face and a flying pig etched onto it. It will be a mauve marble marker.
Please send prayers to my Aunt Josie....after having an operation to rid one cancer, they found more affecting her leg...more operations to come.
Also continue to pray for Dakota Gay,Krysten Petrowsky, David Fitting, and Brittany Graves. All are my dear friends and battle cancer. You can look at my past journal entries to look up their websites.
Mothers Day was not as hard as people thought it would be for me...I think is will be her upcoming birthday on May 20th. Send me extra prayers that day.
Also, I am happy to announce that Anthony will be attending St. Joseph's School for 7th & 8th grade!!! He has officially been accepted on Friday. I have also gone back to school to finish my studies for Ultrasound Tech which was put on hold during Melissa's illness.
My beautiful little girl is shining on us all from Heaven.

I am sorry I have not updated, I have not been feeling well lately, I will update more soon.
I just wanted you to know that we found out that one of the caringbridge links for a child was a fake. I am sorry if you visited her site because I asked you to pray for her. The site is now gone, but it was: http://www3.caringbridge.org/tx/hospitalchic/index.htm

Please continue to pray for all the other people, they are legitimate. Dakota, Brittany Graves, David Fitting, Krysten. You can look back on my past journal entries for their web pages. My Aunt Josie is doing well since the last update from my cousin. Please continue to pray for her as well.

Thank you to all of you who have been sending donations to the organizations in Memory of Melissa! I will keep this list up because I know many of you are still sending donations.
xoxo
Patty

Hi All,
I know many of you have been waiting for an update, so here I go...
Anthony and I are taking each day as it comes, some better than others. For the most part we are doing well. My goal is to keep Melissa's memory alive and this keeps me going everyday.
Holy week kept me busy as well. Our good friend Anita Viaud made her Sacraments the night before Easter and I was there to join in her celebration. Congratulations Anita!
We visited Melissa's grave on Easter after Church and Anthony left her some of their favorite candy and some flowers. Previously, we hung a wind chime that MaryJane bought, and hung it up in the tree above her.
Melissa's friends have also been visiting her. They have come to me on numerous occasions to let me know. Among other friends of ours who have also stopped by to see her. This made me very happy.
We went to my Cousin Linda's house in Montague for Easter Sunday after visiting Melissa. Many of my family members were there. We had a great visit and I was happy to see everyone. They had an egg hunt for the kids. Our Easter tradition is to spend it at my Cousin Linda's house. We returned home very late. My father took pictures, so I will have to wait until he sends me some so that I can post them.
Please continue with the extra prayers to:
My Aunt Josie will be having surgery for cancer on April 1st.
Dakota,His surgery went well: www.caringbridge.org/sc/dakota

Brittany's surgery had been canceled: www.brittanygraves.com

Krysten will be leaving for the Children's Specialized in Mountainside, NJ on April 4th. Alexander went for the genetic test to see if he has the bad gene for FAP and should have the results of this test in about three weeks.

My Friends Joan, Tracey, Elisabeth, & James. They are going through some rough times right now.

Another Brittany who has GBM: http://www3.caringbridge.org/tx/hospitalchic/index.htm

Uncle Augie.

My dad, Tom, who is not doing well with his Leukemia.

And, My son Anthony who always the power of prayer for direction and strength.

Thank you to all of you who have been sending donations to the organizations in Memory of Melissa! I will keep this list up because I know many of you are still sending donations. Also, thanks once again to Zack Gilbert with his Eagle Scout battle of the bands fundraiser for our family and St. Josephs Parish for also raising money for the fund in Memory of Melissa!

Once again, I want to thank all of you for your kind words, prayers, encouragement and condolences during this difficult time in our lives.
I heard the Battle Of The Bands fundraiser was a big success. I would like to thank Zack Gilbert and the Bixby Community Action Committee for all the support you have given to our family. We were honored to be part of your Eagle Scout Project. I do not have all the details yet, nor pictures, but I hope to post some soon. I did not attend, but Anthony did. He had a great time and also played a song on his guitar. Everyone told me he done an awesome job.
On Sunday, the 13th, we went to NYU to see Melissa's artwork that was displayed at The Naomi Cohain Foundation ArtWorks 2005 exhibit. The Naomi Cohain Foundation, is dedicated to the establishment and support of creative and performing art exhibitions, titled Express Yourself, that feature the works of children and young adults suffering from life-threatening and chronic illnesses. Melissa did a self portrait collage made from magazine clippings. She made this piece of art on Jan. 11 at Tomorrow's Children.
I am hoping to post a picture of her portrait as soon as possible. I wish she would have been able to attend. :-( All of the children who performed did a wonderful job.
xo
Patty

Please send extra prayers for my special friends who I admire and Love dearly. Dakota who was battling Medullablastoma has had a recent bad scan which showed a new tumor growth.

Please pray for Brittany Graves...She is in the hospital and needs some extra prayers sent her way...

I want to thank all of you for your kind words, prayers, encouragement and condolences during this difficult time in our lives. I miss my baby girl so much right now that it is too painful for words. I will update more when I am ready. Please know that we are extremely greatful for all that has been done to help our family.

Lynn asked me to update the web page with some information for a fundraiser that was already in the works. It is a Battle of the Bands Fundraiser.

This has been put together by Zack Gilbert as an Eagle Scout Project, with the support of the Bixby Community Action Committee. Zack Gilbert has supported our family in the past with this type of fundraiser. Anthony has been included in this and will be playing a song with his electric guitar.
Our family would like to thank Zack in advance for helping our family.

Monday, February 28, 2005 8:52 PM CST

Thank you for all your Prayers and Kind words.
As most of you know by now, my beautiful baby girl has earned her Angel Wings. She passed on Sunday, February 27, 2005 at 6:30 PM. It is of great comfort to know that she is no longer suffering and watching over all of us now. Melissa's eyes have also been given to give 2 people the gift of sight plus 2 others in need of medical repairs. I know that Melissa would be so proud to help another person in need. She was truly a special person that touched so many people in so many ways. I am so proud of my beautiful daughter. Even at her worst pain, she never complained.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:

PETRIK FUNERAL HOME
140 Palisade Ave.
Bogota, NJ 07603
201-487-3053

Melissa's viewing will be on:

Wednesday, MARCH 2nd 7-9 PM only
Thursday, MARCH 3rd 2-4PM & 7-9 PM

Mass for the Funeral will be on FRIDAY, MARCH 4TH:
9:30 AM
at
St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church
corner of Fortlee Road & Palisade Ave.
in Bogota, NJ

In Lieu of flowers, PLEASE make a donation to one of the organizations listed below to the "Loving Memory of Melissa Ragusa". It would make our family very happy if someone else could benefit from a donation instead of the flowers. Melissa will have enough flowers surrounding her from the immediate family. There have been so many organizations and people that have touched Melissa and our family's lives through out her illness. Here are a few of the many that have helped her in some way. Thank you so much for helping. xo

Melissa's breathing seemed much better today than last night. We hope the patch is starting to work. Her comfort means so much to me. I Pray tomorrow is just as stable. Thanks for all the prayers and comforting words that many of you have sent our way.

Thursday Update:
Melissa had a better night breathing, but she does seem to have more pain today. Please Pray for comfort.

Tuesday, February 22, 2005 9:24 PM CST

Today was somewhat difficult. Melissa did Not have a seizure today, but she has seemed much worse since last night after having one. She has so much chest congestion that she cannot cough it up on her own, so it makes it extremely hard for her to breath. Dr. Thompson ordered a patch to wear behind her ear to help dry up some of the congestion. She seems a little bit better than she did earlier on. The pain meds seem to be keeping her somewhat at comfortable level now that it was raised yesterday.

Father Richard stopped by today to bring the Confirmation Certificate. He told me that they were going to have a special prayer tonight with the children from Melissa's CCD class. I thank you all. And, I enjoy the visits from Father Richard.

Please continue to pray..
With Love & Hugs,
Patty

Last night was rough. Melissa had 3 seizures within one hour. Two were focal and One was full body. She also vomitted. Her meds to control the seizures were increase. Earlier yesterday, her morphine was also increased once again. I think she may be at a comfortable level now with the morphine. I am hoping she is a little more responsive today so that we will be able to find out more about her comfort level. It hurts to see her in pain. Please continue to pray for Melissa.

I have uploaded some photo's from the tiny celebration for Melissa's Confirmation. I also included the picture of Luther's visit to the hospital because I thought that this was such a special and thoughtful thing that the staff has done for us. I found out that the actual person who made this happen for us was the Director of Nursing: Diane. With out her help, Luther would not have been here. A great big THANKS Diane!!!

Sunday, February 20, 2005 8:44 PM CST

As I reported in Melissa's last journal entry, Father Richard came by on February 19th for Melissa to make her Confirmation. We had a small celebration for her today. Kassy, who is her sponsor brought in a small cake. Melissa did manage a few small bites of the icecream cake. Since she is having difficulty swallowing, they have stopped giving the oral meds. Some meds did not come in a form that could be transfused through IV, so they were taken by mouth. One was the Neurontin. But since the dilantin level in her body seems to be ok, her doctor said the dilantin alone should be sufficient.
Melissa still has a lot of neck and back pain. Her Morphine level has been increased once again this morning, and I am happy to report that Physical Therapy has been coming up to help Melissa with her neck pain and ROM exercises.
Extra prayers are needed, please visit:

There are many more webpages to send prayers to. You can also find them through the families that have signed Melissa's web page.
Also, please remember that extra prayers are needed for my son, Anthony as well as Melissa. Anthony has been in the care of friends and family who love him, but I have not been there for him since I am staying at the hospital with Melissa.

UPDATE:
I just wanted everyone to know that Melissa made her CONFIRMATION today!!!! Father Richard came by to perform a small ceremony. Melissa picked her aunt Kassy to be the sponsor. Kassy will be by with a small cake to celebrate. Kassy is also Melissa's God Mother. And, Melissa holds Kassy's middle name represented as Kathleen. Father Richard told me that the paper work as: Melissa Kathleen-Kassy Ragusa.
Father Richard has been a very special friend to us in our times of need. He is from St. Joseph's Parish in Bogota.

Also, please visit the following website and send some prayers her way.. Brittany has the same tumor as Melissa and is going through some rough times:
www.brittanygraves.com

Also, just a quick update about PT...I put a complaint in to consumer affairs here at the hospital since I was so upset and Melissa having a bad night. But I was happy to report that they also showed up today and worked on Melissa's neck and told me she was going to write in her notes the priority and need for daily PT. Dr. Thompson already wrote that daily order, but obviously it was not being followed. Melissa is still in alot of pain and Dr. Thompson has increased the Morphine dose up again by 1/2mg more. Hopefully this will help.

Hi All,
I wish I could report better news, but Melissa has not been doing any better. She has been in a lot of pain due to her back and the stiff neck that she has developed. I have not been very happy with the physical therapy department here. Today they never even showed up. The nurses left several messages and no one returned a call. They heard they were coming up but never did. :-( This upsets me very much since I know my precious baby has been in so much pain. She cannot move her self and with the stiff neck and back pain, it does not make the situation any better. Dr. Thompson has changed the morphine from every 3 hours to a steady continuous dose plus she can increase even that dosage by pushing a button for extra pain relief when needed. Melissa sleeps most of the time and has barely uttered a word today or even yesterday for that matter. She does eat some food, but is having more and more difficulty swallowing. Please pray for extra comfort. Please pray that Melissa has a better weekend.
With Love & Prayers,
Patty

February 16th PM Update:
Luther was here for a visit!!! He was here between 7-9 pm. He was very nervous and was panting alot. He did not know what to do with himself. They had a hard time sticking him in the elevator!!! Melissa was happy that he came, but she was not able to hold him because she cannot move her left side. She didn't say much but fed him a few cookies. He kissed her on the mouth and she wasn't very appreciated by that!! lol We took pictures, but I have to wait for MaryJane and Susan to email them to me so I can post them on the website. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. THOMPSON FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN!!!!!! XO

Hi All,
Just an update to let you know that there has been no change in Melissa's condition. There will be a physical therapist up to see her today because she has been lying in the bed so long. It has been very difficult to change her positions but the nurses have managed in the past 2 days. Melissa has also developed a stiff neck to one side. Hopefully the PT can help with that also. Dr. Thompson has worked some magic inorder to have one of Melissa's dog's (Luther) come up to visit her. This should happen probably tonight. I am sure this will lift Melissa's spirits. She has been so withdrawn and lethargic. We will not be going home because I do not have the man power that it takes around the clock to care for Melissa.
I also want to let you know that I have not been home and I stay with Melissa 24/7 so please do not leave phone messages at my home, I do not always get them. I only have room for 9 messages and MaryJane checks it sometimes for me. I do have a lap top here at the hospital that keeps me occupied. The hospital provided this service for me. I check the email sometimes. Some of my very good friends are helping me with Anthony. He is going to school and his teacher reports that all has been well with him so far. Please keep him in your prayers also. I am not there for him right now.

I met a wonderful family here at the hospital. They have been going through a rough time with their daughter Krysten. I helped them to put together a web page for her. You may want to stop by and drop a note of encouragement and prayer:

www.caringbridge.org/nj/krysten

Sometimes families going through similar situations with this evil cancer can relate to one another and they share a special bond. I have met many people who share my similar bond. Two more special families that share a place in my heart are:

The Conder family. I met Lannette through the Squirreltales website. She reached out to me when I needed someone and has been with me ever since. They are the ones who originally helped set up Melissa's web page and flew us down to meet them in South Carolina. You can extend prayers to thier son Dakota at:

www.caringbridge.org/sc/dakota
&
The Cummings family. I met Kathy through a cancer kids website when I was searching for another child with the same tumor as Melissa. Glioblastoma Multiforme is actually rare in children and more common in adults. I immediately felt a bond with Kathy. She too has provided me comfort through our journey. Her son David's website is:

www.caringbridge.org/fl/david

And, Of cause I have so many wonderful friends and family that have offered us support and help during these rough times. There are just too many to mention, but you all know who you are. Many of you have reached out in so many ways and it has been very much appreciated. I may not always thank all of you, but please know that I appreciate all that has been done.

Please continue to pray.

Hi All,
It is hard to say whether or not Melissa had a better day...one thing I can report is that she has not vomitted today, but there were other unpleasant things that Melissa had to deal with. Mostly, she did not communicate much today. Please pray for a better Monday. Thanks for all your prayers, please keep them coming.

Hi All,
What seemed like would be a better day turned out to be the same old scene. Upon wakening, Melissa seemed slightly more alert, and even slightly lifted her left arm. However, this did not last. Melissa's symptoms continued and she slipped back into her withdrawn, lethargic state. It has been very painful to see my precious baby endure all of this horror that comes with the disease. If I could trade places with her to take away all that she has endured, I would. It just does not seem fair and there are no answers as to why this would be happening to such a wonderful and beautiful girl. Yet, throughout it all, she does not complain. She is so BRAVE. A true inspiration. I was truly blessed to have such a wonderful daughter.
Our family has been extremely lucky to have so much support and help from family and friends. Many of you have help ease some of the difficulties that have come our way. The support and prayers that many of you have sent our way have been extremely appreciated. I pray tomorrow will bring Melissa a better day. Please keep Anthony in your prayers also. He has also shown so much bravery. This has not been an easy road for him either.
With Love, Hugs and Prayers,
Patty

We are still in the hospital. I have nothing good to report. Anthony has been informed of how bad Melissa's situation actually is. He has not taken the news well. This has been extremely hard for all of us involved. I know many of you are feeling just as helpless. I am asking all of you to pray for my family. Thank you for all of your support and prayers that you have already sent our way.

Patty

PS....I would like to thank Bart for the flowers that were sent to the hospital, but I had to redirect them to my house. I am sorry but the hospital does not allow flowers on the pediatric oncology unit that Melissa is on. I just wanted everyone to know that so that this does not happen to anyone else. Prayers are definitly acepted!! Thank you.

Melissa is back at the hospital. More seizures and vomitting. Please pray. I am hoping we will be back home by Sunday.
Please Pray.

Monday, January 31, 2005 1:43 PM CST

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all of the prayers, please continue to pray.
Melissa has been doing fairly well. She seems to be getting some strenghth back. Lying around does not help, so we tried to surprise Melissa with a visit from her friends. We planned Ice Cream Sundaes and a Movie. They all had fun and I had alot of help thanks to MaryJane, Judy, Lynn, Alex, Jody, & Kassy. I posted some pictures of the night, so take a peak. I have more, but will need to develop them first. Some girls could not make it and Jillian had to leave early before I took pictures.

Melissa has an appointment with her doctor on Tuesday, and we are still getting to know the Home Care team.

I will try to give an update soon, keep praying!!

Hi All,

Thank you so much for all the prayers you have sent our way. I know many of you are wondering what happened....Melissa began to have seizures on Tuesday throughout the AM. It all started at 2:30am. Melissa was admitted to the hospital to stabilize and control the seizure activity. She was released tonight and is now resting.
Melissa will be on Home Care from now on. Please continue to pray.
With Love, Hugs and Prayers,
Patty

Hi All,
Melissa has been doing well. She was having some cramps in her legs and just as a precaution, Dr. Thompson sent her to have a vascular ultrasound of the legs. He said it is possible to get blood clots with this chemo. The results were good. She seems to be handling the Zarnestra very well. Keep the prayers coming!!!

Hi All,
I just wanted to give you an update on how well Melissa has been doing on the new chemo.
She started Saturday morning and has been doing well. She had 2 headaches and some tiredness, some numbness and tingling in the feet, but otherwise I feel she has been doing well.
We have an appoinment at the clinic for blood work Tuesday. Please continue to pray.
xo
Patty

Wednesday, January 5, 2005 7:32 AM CST

Hi All,
Melissa will be getting another MRI and blood work this afternoon. It is required for the new chemo protocol that she will be given. She had an Echo and EKG yesterday, which was also required.
Melissa will be taking Zarnestra inwhich she will be involved with an experimental protocol. This drug has not been tested on children yet. There will be about 90 patients on this study. It is in Phase II of it's study. There is a wide range of side effects, but we wont know which of the side effects Melissa will have until after she is on it.
Please pray that her side effects will be minimal.
Also, the change over to the Neurontin seems to be working. The left sided numbness has subsided. Melissa did get pins and needles in her heels recently though.
All in all, Melissa has been doing well lately.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!!!!!!! I hope everyone will have a happy & healthy new year! We celebrated New Years Eve with Kassy, Brian, Krista, Sydney, MaryJane & Susan. We went out to eat at the Wagon Wheel in Bergenfield. Krista had a blast dancing to the DJ! We had a blast watching her! MaryJane and Susan also took us to NYC by limo to see the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center, and a tour through St. Patrick's Cathedral. Diane, Gloria, Kevin & Cole also came with us. Thanks MaryJane & Susan for being so wonderful to us!!! We went to visit my Dad Up State NY on New Years Day and stayed overnight till Sunday. Kassy, Brian and the girls are staying until Monday.

Thank you for all your prayers, keep them coming!
And our thanks to ALL of you who have made our Holiday Season so special!!!

Melissa was not able to start the new chemo protocol on New Years Day because it requires an echo and blood tests before starting. It is an experimental drug called Zarnestra. It is in stage 2 of it's clinical trial. Melissa has her tests scheduled for this Tuesday, and will probably start it on Thursday. She will then require 2 blood draws per week.
With Love, Hugs & Prayers,
Patty

We want to wish everyone a HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!
Melissa and Anthony enjoyed opening their gifts from everyone on Christmas morning.
We also received some sad news about our Aunt Rina, she earned her wings on Christmas. Our deepest sympathy to our surviving cousins and their families, Aunts, Uncles and my Mom. Aunt Rina will watch over us all.
Melissa will be starting a new chemo on January 1st. It is in phase II clinical trial. The side effects vary and will require Melissa to get blood work twice per week and she will need an echo and blood tests prior to starting it. Melissa still gets alot of numbness in her left leg and arm. Otherwise she has been doing well. Please continue to Pray for her.
With Love, Hugs and Prayers to All,
Patty

Although the news of Melissa's MRI of the brain was not the news that we wanted to hear, we are going to still try and make the best out of the upcoming holiday season. Thank you for all your prayers and concern. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY for Melissa and our family.

Monday, December 13, 2004 0:12 AM CST

Hi All,
We had a busy, fun weekend! Melissa was a little tired, but managed to enjoy herself. I will try to post some pictures as soon as possible. Melissa had a lot of numbness and tingling on her left leg and arm. We are hoping for the Neurontin to start working. She also has been having a lot of back pain recently. Dr. Thompson ordered another MRI of the Spine for this coming Wednesday in addition to her Brain MRI for this upcoming Friday. So PLEASE, PLEASE, pray for Melissa for BOTH MRI's!!! They are scheduled for the 15th & the 17th!!! Again, please keep Aunt Rina in your prayers, she is on Hospice. I will update some more soon.
Good bye for now,
Patty

12/15/04 UPDATE:
MELISSA'S SPINE MRI IS CLEAN, NO SIGNS OF GROWTH!!!! PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR HER FRIDAY MRI OF HER BRAIN.

Thursday, December 9, 2004 9:44 AM CST

Hi All,
Melissa's numbness and tingling in her left leg and arm have been occuring increasingly more often lately. We had a blood draw at the clinic yesterday and Melissa's dilantin level had dropped dramatically from borderline low, to very low. Doctor Thompson took her off dilantin completely and started her on a new anti-seizure med called Gabapentin (Neurontin). In the next 3 days she will gradually work up to 900 mg per day. He also increased her decadron back up to 4 mg per day. Her weight is down at aprox. 91 lbs. and she is having lower back pain. Through all of this, Melissa is still going to school. And, for the most part, is doing well. Remember to pray for her upcoming MRI on Dec. 17th.
We would like to thank Ray Ferrone Hair Craft for Melissa's new style, she really looks great and it has definitely been a nice moral boost for her. Thanks! We would also like to thank everyone else who has been kind and generous during these rough times. There are so many people who have reached out to make this holiday season special!
We will be having a busy weekend...Friday is Anthony's Holiday Chorus Concert, Sat. morning, the Childrens Brain Tumor Foundation in NY has invited us to their Breakfast Holiday party at Maddam Tussan's Wax Museum in Manhattan, Sat. night, our social worker gave us tickets to see the Nutcracker at Paramus Catholic High School, and Sunday is the Tomorrow's Childrens Holiday party at the Glen Point Marriott. Busy!!!!!!
If you have not already seen Melissa's pig quilt, then visit lovequilts.org and view it there...once you are on the website, click on the 2005 children or click on the 2004 finished quilts...she is in both places.
Remember to continue to pray for Melissa and also her Aunt Rina who is not doing very well since her cancer has spread and is now on Hospice. And all of our other caringbridge friends that we have made during our ordeal.

With Love & Hugs,
Patty

Hi All,
Melissa's computer is up and running thanks to Steve Pordzick!!! I was able to download some new pictures for the web site so check them out!!!
Melissa's beautiful pig quilt was sent to her recently. The picture I posted does not show the wonderful detail and skill that went into it as well as the prayers and love. Melissa loves her quilt. If you know how to cross stitch, you may want to help make squares for the other children that are awaiting quilts. Please visit lovequilts.org
You can also see each one of Melissa's squares that are on her quilt.

Melissa's Aunt Kassy's husband's side of the family have been very generous to us. Her niece, Meghan Schwerzler and her family had a Bake Sale Fundraiser for us recently in Livonia, NY. I have posted some pictures of it. They had some Links of Love that they sold and Melissa trimmed our tree with them. We would like to extend our thanks to the Schwerzler family for helping us out.
____________________________________________________________
Melissa has been doing fairly well these days. Although she has been having alot of numbness and tingling in her left leg and arm. Dr. Thompson increased her daily dose of Dilantin to 400 mg each day. He said if she gets another low level of dilantin in her next blood draw this Wednesday, then he will change the medication to something different. Her weight has been at the lower end of 92 lbs. Melissa's next MRI is Dec. 17th.

Our house has been nicely decorated on the outside, curtesy of Jody Marino...Thanks Jody, it looks great!!!! :o)

Continue to pray for Melissa.

Hi All,
I am sorry I have not given much of an update lately, but Melissa's computer is not up to date with all the antivirus information and her computer is the one I use to download all of the pictures that I want to put on Melissa's website. I have a bunch I want to put on. Hopefully I will be able to do it soon, our friend Steve is looking at her computer to see why I cannot update the new norton cd. Besides that, it has been very hectic lately. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We had dinner at my sister Kassy's house with all 3 of my sisters. Melissa's Aunt Debbie, Michael and Stephen were up from Florida, and Aunt Nay Nay was down from Upstate NY.
____________________________________________________________
There is not much right now to update about Melissa because she is doing so well!!!!!!!! It makes me so happy since it is the holiday season and she does not have too many side effects. Her calcium and dilantin levels are low, but not dangerously low. She is getting another blood draw on Friday.
Melissa will be getting her next MRI on Dec. 17th.
I am going to end here for now and hopefully we will get Melissa's computer back soon.
xoxoxo
With Love Hugs and Prayers,
Patty

I still have more updates to write, but I want to show the pictures with the journal entry.

Wednesday, November 24, 2004 7:03 AM CST

Hi All,
Melissa had her blood work on Monday and it showed that she is borderline low for the Dilantin level and she is low with the calcium level. She has been having the numbness and tingling in the left leg. She has to have some calcium supplements and another blood work done on Friday.
Melissa has been fine otherwise. I will update again after her bloodwork.

WE WISH ALL OF YOU A VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!! PLEASE KEEP MELISSA IN YOUR PRAYERS!!!!!

Sunday, November 21, 2004 6:38 PM CST

Hi All.......
Just a quick update to let you know how our vacation went. We were away from Sunday, Nov. 14th thru today, Sunday, Nov. 21st. We had a really great time and wanted to thank Jim Viola for getting us this great vacation.
We were at a Shawnee Pennsylvania timeshare townhouse. The place was so great!!! It was like a home away from home with some great extras!! There was a huge jacuzzi tub, 2 showers, 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a fireplace, full kitchen, DVD, VCR, etc!!! There were all kinds of activities planned at the Shawnee clubhouse. We definitely took advantage of the activities such as...tye dye shirt making, Jeopordy, Balderdash, Bingo, family movie night ect. Some activities were cancelled due to the small amount of people that showed up. It is an "off season" and there were not many timeshare owners around. But we still had a great time!!!! Anthony missed his friends, and school (???I never thought he would miss school, lol) So he left on Wednesday with his Dad. Sal would come and go, he did not spend much time on this vacation because of work and transportation reasons. Kassy, Krista and Sydney stayed with us until Wednesday also. So after Wednesday, me and Melissa enjoyed the rest of the week together. We went to see the new SpongeBob Movie on Saturday.
Melissa was feeling pretty good up until then. On Saturday, she was getting numbness and tingling in her left leg. We called Dr. Thompson and he had me increase her Decadron dosage, but he still does not want to increase the Dilantin because he is still worried about the Dilantin poisoning like she got the last time. She is going in for Blood Counts tomorrow morning (MON.) So we will know more then. She will start her chemo (VP-16) again tonight.
I am going to end here for now.
Please keep up the prayers.
With Love, Hugs & Prayers,
Patty

Wednesday, November 10, 2004 4:17 PM CST

Hi All, I guess you have all been waiting for an update...we were at the clinic today for Melissa's blood counts. Her Dilantin level is low again. Dr. Thompson wants to alternate 300 and 400 mg doses every other day because he is afraid of increasing it everyday since he is worried about Melissa getting the Dilantin poisoning once again. Her other counts are within normal limits. Our other concern is Melissa's weight loss. Last week she weighed in at 93lbs. and this week she is 89lbs. Melissa started at approx. 106 lbs. The doctor wants Melissa to drink 2 boosts (high calorie drinks) per day. He also lowered her decadron. Melissa has 2 weeks off from the chemo VP-16 but has to continue the Tamoxifen. Other than all of this, Melissa has been feeling pretty good.

We will be going to Pennsylvania for a week in November. Jim Viola a bogota resident and friend presented us with this surprise week vacation for our family. We are very greatful for this opportunity. It is a time share condo in Shawnee PA. Jim's wife is a missing person and disappeared from our home town of Bogota on 2-13-01. You can visit the website at: http://patriciaviolamissing.homestead.com/
You can read their story and maybe you can pass the info on maybe some one out there can help.

Melissa's brother Anthony turned 11 on November 11th! 11 on 11/11!!! Her cousin Krista also turned 2 on 11/11. We celebrated with his school friends at the local Sports World, and then afterward, we celebrated Anthony & Krista's birthdays at a restaurant with Aunt Kassy.
Please continue to pray for Melissa.

Hi All,
Just a quick update....nothing new with Melissa. She is still doing well. We had a great weekend. On Sat. we went to one of those mystery dinner shows with Aunt Kassy, Uncle Brian and Nick. Anthony and Nick had a blast with the actors! On Sunday we went to see STOMP in NYC with our good friends and neighbors-MaryJane and Susan. Aunt Kassy came also. afterward, we took a walk around the villiage in all those crazy NY shops!!
I do not have any new pictures posted yet. The Halloween pics are still there.

Hi All,
Melissa has been feeling much better these last few days. Her doctor feels it really was the dilantin poisoning. This is not uncommon for the type of illness that Melissa has and considering the different meds she is on and the way that the liver enzymes have been handling all of it after all of the different chemos that she has been on.

On Friday the 29th, Jen, Judy, Dennis & Bart threw Melissa a Halloween Fundraiser Party. We all had a great time and Susan DJ'd the party once again!! Melissa went as her favorite character from Sponge Bob as PATRICK STAR, and Anthony dressed as a girl for halloween, they both looked really good and had a great time trick or treating.
I posted some pics from the party.

Hi All,
I know you all are wondering how Melissa is doing, well.. she is much better today. She is almost back to the Melissa that we know! This is what happened... After we arrived home from the hospitial yesterday, Melissa began to vomit again. She was not able to keep anything down. So, last night, we had do bring her to the emergency room so that that could get some IV fluids in her. We did not get admitted. They just wanted to hydrate her. We went to the clinic for blood work today and we have to go back again tomorrow morning for more blood work. Dr. Thompson thinks that she has dilantin poinsoning because the levels are very high in her body and this could be the cause for the vomitting. He said that this is not unusual. Sometimes the meds can interact with eachother. He wants to make sure that the levels are decreasing before we can put her back on the dilantin. Please continue to pray for Melissa.

Hi All,
As you may or may not know, Melissa spent the night at the hospital last night. She was fine in the morning, except the usual nausea, then shortly after ariving to school, she was vomitting. Dr. Thompson wanted to see her and he had a CT done and then admitted her. She was given phenergan and decadron and after sleeping it all off awoke and was feeling fine. She was discharged this morning and was feeling fine, but started vomitting again at home with the same lightheaded/dizziness that she felt the day before. I spoke to Ann, her nurse at the clinic and she told me her dilantin labs where very high and that could cause the vomitting. She is to go back to the clinic tomorrow for more blood work.
Please continue to pray for Melissa. I will continue to give you updates as I can.

Hi All,
Melissa has been getting by with minimal side effects from the chemo combination. Mostly it is nausea, but she is still attending school. Her blood counts were within normal limits, the platelets were borderline, but nothing to worry about.

Melissa's Grandpa came for a visit this weekend, it was not a planned visit, but we enjoyed having him. We also went to see the Big Apple Circus on Sunday. The Childrens Brain Tumor Foundation in NY gave us some complimentary tickets for the show. I posted some pictures.

Melissa is an October child for www.makeachildsmile.org
She has been receiving so many cards and gifts from people all over the USA & the world!! It really does put a smile on her face. She looks forward to the batches of mail coming from the PO Box and opening up each piece that is addressed to her. There are so many children that are featured on this website that you can also write to. Check it out and put a smile on a childs face, it only takes a letter or a card to cheer up a child with an illness. Also, if you cross stitch, check out lovequilts.org

Hello again,
Melissa started her new chemo protocol on Sat. Oct 16th, the day after her MRI. Up until this morning, Melissa was feeling just nausea, but vomitted today. Still, it was not as bad as the past chemo treatments. Once again, the combination that she is on is VP-16, Tamoxifen, & celebrex.
Dr. Thompson called me on Tuesday to let me know that he has discussed the MRI further with Melissa's surgeon. It is possible that the cancer has gotten to a blood vessel and the pressure of the fluid is keeping it from bleeding. There is also evidence of blood in the fluid. He also wanted me to let him know of even the slightest headache that she may have. Of cause, the first one was last night. She started with a stiff neck, and then said she had a headache on the back of her head and spine. After he spoke to Melissa, he had her take 2 tylonol. Melissa did go to school today.
____________________________________________________________
On the lighter side, we went Apple picking this past Sunday with my friends, Jennifer and Judy. Kassy and Krista also tagged along, but left early. I had already posted those pictures. Of cause, Melissa posed with the pigs!
Last year, Melissa was a Pig for Halloween, but this year, she is going to be her other favorite character, Patrick Star (from Sponge Bob- Patrick is the starfish).
Also, Jennifer and some of my other friends (Bart, Dennis, & Judy) have put together a Halloween fundraiser party for Melissa. It is at the Knights of Columbus in Cliffside Park on Friday, Oct. 29th. It is 25.00 for adults and children are free. If you are interested in going, you can contact Jen at 201-921-7143 or email me, she gave me about 12 tickets if any one asked me for them.

Also, another organization that is connected with this organization is Love Quilts. www.lovequilts.org They are making Melissa a Cross stitch Pig Quilt. If you go to that website, you can click on 2005 children and find Melissa there. I noticed that her quilt is closed for stitchers. If any of you reading this knows how to cross stitch, this organization is always looking for stitchers for these quilts. There is another emergency quilt that needs more stitchers in order to close. People from all over the world cross stitch a square (each quilt is a theme picked by the child and family) and then they are all put together for a child.

Once again, I am asking you to keep Melissa in your prayers and pray that everything goes smooth through the holidays.

Hi All,
It's only been 4 weeks since the last MRI...once again, not a favorable one. More enhancement of the tumor is shown as well as growth in the ventricles. Since the dura was exposed, there is fluid that travelled to different areas of the brain. Dr. Thompson thinks this pressure of fluid will eventually cause headaches and will need to be drained. Melissa is also showing more weakness on her left side. Dr. Thompson reminded Melissa how important it is to let me know of any side effects she may be having. She knew her left side was weaker but did not say anything about it. Melissa will be starting the protocol that we have discussed tomorrow. She will start the VP-16, Tamoxifen, & the celebryx. This combination should not prevent her from going to school and having fun on the weekends. On the outside, Melissa still looks good. Once again, please keep Melissa in your daily prayers.

Hi All,
We just arrived back from getting Melissa's blood work. The results are not in yet, but we did not start her chemo today. Dr. Thompson wants her back again this Friday for an MRI and then afterward she can start the chemo. The increased dilantin has helped with the numbness Melissa was getting in her arm and leg. Melissa will be receiving this protocol for her chemotherapy: VP-16, Tamoxifen, & Celebrex.

We went Pumpkin picking this past Sunday with our friends Steve, Mr. & Mrs. Pordzick, Kathy, MaryJane, and the kids: Chelsea, Chris & Bianca. We had a good time. We did the hay ride to the pumpkin patch and went through the corn maze. You can see some photos that I posted of the day.

Hi All,
We had Melissa's blood counts on Wednesday. Melissa was also having increased numbness in her left arm and left leg. Dr. Thompson thinks this can be contributed to the very low Dilantin levels shown with the blood work. He increased her Dilantin dosage by another 100 mg. Melissa is now taking 500 mg of Dilantin per day. However, her white counts are back up and he wants her to start her new chemo protocol next Tuesday. He is giving her a mild combination instead of an aggressive one in order to sustain life and keep her going to school. The combination of pills that Melissa will be receiving in this protocol are: VP-16, Tamoxifen, & Celebrex. He believes this combination of oral meds will give her mimimal side effects.

Hi All,
We arrived back from our Florida Family Reunion last night. We all had such a great time. My mother and Pop Pop Al gave everyone Hopper passes to 4 of Disney's theme parks: Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot & MGM. We stayed at this great place called Pop Century. It featured themes bringing you back in time through the years 60's, 70's, 80's, & 90's. Big Duncan Yo Yo's, Big Wheels, Twister, Bowling Pins, etc. Really great stuff. It was hard to keep 9 different families together, so basically we all went our own way or grouped with a family or 2 at times. We did all manage to come together for one meal at MGM. We celebrated Al's birthday that day. Melissa was worn out very quickly so we rented wheelchairs daily to keep up her energy. There was soooooooo much walking and soooooo much to do!!!! Well, I am going to stop here for now. Melissa will be getting her blood counts tomorrow and we know what protocol melissa will be getting. I will give you that update in a day or so.
Bye for now,
xo
Patty
PS- Melissa is featured on the MAC's web site for October:
www.makeachildsmile.org
There is also a link on the bottom of this page that you can click on to bring you to the MAC's Page.

Also through this site you can click on Love Quilts link. Love Quilts is making her a pig quilt.

Hi All,
We are leaving to go to Florida on Wednesday morning. We will be gone until Sunday. My Mother and her husband Al (Pop-Pop) paid for the entire families on both sides to get together for a family reunion. They chose October because my Mom's birthday is Oct. 8th and Al's is Oct. 1st. We will be staying at Disney's Pop Century Resort.
____________________________________________________________
Melissa had her blood work today. Dr. Thompson just called to let me know that Melissa's counts are on their way down. The white counts are going to drop like they did the last time. Her Dilantin levels are also very low. She has to take a higher dose now. His only concern is that if she should get a fever of 101, he said we are to go directly to the emergency room in Florida. Please pray that this trip goes smooth for us. We do not want to wind up in a hospital!!
____________________________________________________________
I have updated some new pictures of Melissa and Anthony. Tomorrow's Children gave us tickets the Sept. 25th's game. We had a good time. Melissa brought along her best friend Angelique.
Melissa is going to be featured on the MAC's web site for October: www.makeachildsmile.org
The link is also on the bottom of this page. It is the Make a child smile organization. I was told because of the hurricane going through Florida (that is where MAC's is) that her information might not show on Oct. 1st, but keep looking for her every so often. Also, the MAC's site also has a link on it for the Love Quilts. Melissa is featured on Love Quilts 2005 children. They are making her a cross stitch pig quilt.
I am going to end the update here because I have to get packing. I will try to update again soon after we return. Good Bye for Now.
With Luv, hugs & prayers,
Patty

I have updated the photo page with some pictures of our Boston Trip. Our family would like to thank Elaine McKay and the Teaneck Rotary Club for giving us a great weekend trip to Boston. As hard as it was to hear the devistating news about Melissa's condition, this trip was a great pick-me-up. We stayed in a beautiful executive suite at the Copley Marriott. It was like we were staying at someone's house! Our room had a beautiful veiw in front of the Prudential building. We visited the New England Aquarium, the Science Museum, Hard Rock Cafe`, Cheers, Faneuil Hall and even took the Boston Duck tour (a land and sea tour) Melissa and Anthony both got to steer the duck in the Charles River!! The Rotary Club is a great organization that helps many people in need.

I also have pictures of Melissa receiving a Basket of Hope, and other great items given by FUTUREANDHOPE.ORG Kurt Warner, the Giants Quarterback (#13) and his wife Brenda were visiting Melissa's hospital and handing out all sorts of nice gifts to the children on Tuesday when Melissa was getting some blood work. I visited Kurt & Brenda's web page www.KURTWARNER.ORG and the above link. They are 2 wonderful, busy people, helping out children with illnesses.

I also want to thank many of you for all the help and prayers that has been sent our way. It has meant so much to us. Please continue praying we need all the prayers we can get.

If you have not heard by now, Melissa's MRI on Monday showed tumor spread. This sad news gives limited options. Dr. Thompson is checking on 2 possible clinical trials that may be available, or we can try a different chemo. The PCV did not work. Surgery is no longer an option. We will have to wait until her counts drop and then go back up to begin any new chemo treatment. Thanks once again for all your prayers, concern & support that everyone has extended to our family. It means so much to us. We will be away this weekend. The Rotary Club of Teaneck has given us a weekend trip to Boston.

My news is not good. Melissa had an MRI on Monday. It showed growth of the tumor. We will be meeting with Dr. Thompson this morning to discuss the next step. Please Pray for Melissa.

Tuesday, September 7, 2004 3:15 PM CDT

Hi All. It's Monday and Melissa has started the chemo last night.......It was not a good night. She vomitted most of the night. I think about having to way out the pros and the cons of the poisonous chemo and I feel sad. I think about how I was waiting for her counts to rise so that she can get the chemo into her system, and now, after seeing the effects of it, I still feel so uneasy. She does not deserve this, nor does any other child! Well, she is much better this morning, just a little exhausted. But she is such a trooper and getting back to her old self again as the day moves on. Her next MRI is scheduled for Mon. Sept. 13th. Please say lots of prayers and add her to your prayer groups. She is also getting the IV chemo that day.
____________________________________________________________
Melissa is starting school tomorrow. She is VERY excited! The Christening went very well and we had a good time. As well as the yankee game (the Yanks lost). Next weekend is her girlscout troop camping trip. I will also be attending the trip with her troop. She is also looking forward to camping.

I will end here. Please keep Melissa in your prayers.

It's Friday and I have the news that you all have been waiting for.............HER COUNTS ARE BACK UP!!!!!!!!! She can finally start the chemo on Monday!!! The ANC is 945. Melissa's nurse told me I can expect the same thing to happen again in a few more weeks after she starts the chemo again. I guess by then I will somewhat know what to expect, I hope.

We are going to the Yankee game tomorrow. They gave us the tickets and a parking pass at the Softball fundraiser. On Sunday, Sydney will be getting baptized. (Melissa's cousin, my niece, Kassy's baby) So we do have another busy weekend. Melissa starts school on Wednesday and she is looking forward to going. I am hoping for a smooth transition since it is a new school and the meeting with the hospital/school won't take place until a week after she starts.

Tuesday, August 31, 2004 6:55 AM CDT

Hi All,
Melissa's white counts have dropped once again. It is the ANC (Absolute Neutrophil Count). This is the measure of the number of infection fighting white blood cells. Her measure leaves her at a moderate risk of infection. She still is not able to start the chemo. But, on the flip side, her HGB value is rising. This gives the Red Blood Cell their color and carries oxygen, so if Melissa seems pale to you, this is the reason. There is nothing we can do but wait. She will have another blood draw on Friday and I will update you once again. We will also be given the next date for her MRI. Melissa still "looks" good, and for that we should be greatful, but please continue to pray. Melissa is going to attend her orientation for school today and she is very excited. Believe it or not, she looks forward to going back to school. She also knows to avoid anyone with a cold.

Hi All,
I know some of you are waiting to hear if Melissa's counts are up yet, but unfortunately they dropped a bit lower. Not to worry, we just have to make sure she does not get a fever of 101. She has to make sure she is not around anyone with a cold. She does not have the white blood cells to fight an infection, so please keep this in mind when visiting. She will not be able to start her next round of chemo until the counts come up. We will try again next week. Otherwise, Melissa seems to be feeling fine. We are still going to Sal's Ironworker's picnick tomorrow and then to Maryjane and Susan's barbque afterward. We are trying to make every weekend as fun as possible!!!!
Anyway, I will end here and give another update next week after her blood counts.
Good bye until then..
with Love, hugs, & Prayers,
Patty

Another quick update...you can click on past journal entries to read past updates also. We were at the clinic yesterday getting Melissa's counts so that she could start her second round of chemo since she has so many busy weekends coming up and we wanted to avoid the 2 week Tyramine diet restriction from the procarbazine and that she can enjoy some of these days with some peace....As you all know, Melissa is on the PCV treatment schedule (CeeNu, Procarbazine, and Vincristine- both pills and IV chemo regamines)...Well, it turns out that her blood counts were off, the Neutrophils were low. This is the white blood cell that attacks the bacteria. However, it is not too low and Melissa's nurse Ann, suspects that it was probably lower and is now on its way back up. This will just delay her starting the chemo until the counts come back up. Ann also told us that the CeeNu can do this especially and it has a 2-3 week delay on affecting the blood counts. We just have to make sure Melissa does not get a fever, so if you are not feeling very well and plan on visiting, please send a card instead! ;-) lol....Melissa will be getting another blood draw on this Friday...pray that the counts go up!! Also, Dr. Thompson said we could skip the procarbazine this round so that she can enjoy all her activities without the Tyramine restricted diet!!! YAY!!! We are VERY HAPPY about that!
Anyway, I will update you after her blood counts on Friday.
Good bye for now.
Luv and prayers,
Patty

Melissa has been doing very well and has had only minor symptoms from the chemo. Unfortunately at this time, she is not able to go swimming due to the scar not healing. She will be starting another round of the chemo soon since her blood counts are within normal limits.
I will try to give another update soon. Thank you for all your get well wishes and prayers!

I also wanted to THANK EVERYONE for the CHARITY SOFTBALL FUNDRAISER that the Bogota Residence, Police Dept., Fire Dept., Lynn Demetrakis, & Jody Marino, etc. had for Melissa and our Family. The weather held up nicely and it was a wonderful turnout! Lynn and Jody have all access to all of our outstanding bills and the money raised will help pay them. Mayor Steven Lonegan was also present to proclaim AUGUST 14TH to be observed as MELISSA RAGUSA DAY. The Police and Fireman were also thinking about having a fundraising event every year for the future children of the community who may need assistance. We may have a small town, but there are many big HEARTS in BOGOTA!!!! Melissa's surgeon, Dr. Mazzola, also stopped at the fundraiser to say hello! Hi All,
I just updated some photos of our little "get-a-way" this weekend! I needed some stress relief so we threw some clothes in a bag and took a ride to Pennsylvania! We really lucked out and found a place to stay. We had a great time. On the way home, we stopped off at Shawnee's Water park and had some more fun! I posted some pics. Today, Melissa's aunt Kassy treated us to The Liberty Science Center. I also posted pics.
Melissa has been handling the Chemo very well, but we cannot wait until this Friday when she is off of the Procarbazine for a few weeks! The tyramine restricted diet that she has to be on is soooo difficult! Just a few more days!
Bye for now...
With Love and Prayers,
Patty

Tuesday, July 27, 2004 5:40 PM CDT

Hi All,
Today we went Sailing with the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation at the South Street Seaport in New York. We had a blast! Aunt Kassy, Krista, Sydney, and Grandma joined us. There was crafts and magicians, etc. Then, we took a sail up the Hudson River near the Statue of Liberty.
Melissa has been having good days but not so great nights. The tyramine diet restriction is such a drag! Today she wanted a hotdog so bad at the Kids Cruise, but she had to pass. I think it was the fact that she could not have one that she wanted it more! Anyway, overall, it was a good day despite the so so weather. I posted some pictures of the day.
Keep her in your prayers!
Love,
Patty

Dear family and friends,
Melissa started her Chemo on Friday, June 16th. It is a cycle called PCV. It is a combination of pills and IV chemo (Procarbazine, Lomustine (CCNU), and Vincristine). The chemo that is in the Gliadel wafers is called: BCNU or Carmustine.
Chemo has been going well so far for Melissa. She has some nausea, but it is pretty much under control with the Zofran. So far she has had the Ceenu for the first 8 days and then yesterday at Tommorrow's Children, she received the Vincristine. Tonight she will start the Procarbazine. This is a tough one since she has to watch what she eats. She has to stay away from foods that contain Tyramine. Tyramine can cause an adverse reaction causing high blood pressure.
Once again I would like to thank everyone for all the help we have received. Please continue to pray for Melissa everyday. Please add another prayer for a boy named Cody. I met his mother, Kathy B., in the PICU at Hackensack Med. Cnt. He was also operated on for a brain tumor. He has had some complications but should pull out of it and be on a road to recovery with some prayers.

With Love, Hugs, & Prayers,
Patty

Hi All,
We just arrived home tonight about 6PM. I am happy to inform you that Melissa is in better spirits now that she is in her own bed!! It was a little rough for a while, but she has snapped back to "almost" the Melissa that we all know! She was not speaking much at the hospital. She will not get on the telephone because she says it hurts her head. Please give her time. I will try to give a better update soon, for now I need to relax my self, this has been very overwhelming. Thank you for all you thoughts and prayers, please continue to pray.
With Luv,
Patty

Sunday, July 4, 2004 6:53 AM CDT

Hello again,
I just ran home to take a "real" shower...so I am able to leave you this update:
Melissa was operated on 7-2-04. She had 8 gliadel wafers implanted. These wafers are chemo put directly into the tumor cavity after it is removed.
The surgery went well and she is recovering much better than expected. She has been pretty out of it for the last 2 days, but I am hoping she will be feeling better today.
She is in the PICU at Hackensack Medical Center, but please do not send flowers, she cannot receive them there. Please keep Melissa in your prayers.
I will try to keep you informed if I come home again. Hopefully we will be home during the week.
With Love, and prayers,
Patty

Dear Family and Friends,
The news I bring to you is not good. Melissa had an unfavorable MRI on June 17th. Her symptoms started a few days later and also had her first seizure inwhich she was put on Dilantin in the hospital. Melissa is home at this time and looks and acts very well, however, she will be operated on probably less than a week from now. More details will follow. We have also visited Ray Skop from the Ray of Hope Foundation and prayed at his House of Rosary. Our trip to Maine has been cancelled once again.
I am ending here and hope to give you an update soon.
PLEASE PRAY FOR MELISSA EVERY DAY.
My love to all,
Patty

____________________________________________________________Melissa's 12th Birthday was on May 20th, We are celebrating her birthday on May 29th Memorial Day weekend with a Back yard Bar-b-Que. She will have some fun with her friends, I purchased some water guns, a sprinkler, etc. I will let you know how it goes!
Also, Thank you for all of the birthday wishes that you have sent Melissa! She also had a ton of new chemo angels that I will mention on the next journal entry.
She also recently arrived back from her Washington DC trip. She had loads of fun and even met and shook hands with President Bush! Wow!!!
She has also been playing softball and even pitching! She really enjoys it.
Melissa has been kept very busy lately, she is graduating from the 6th grade on June 9th. They have been busy with lots of graduation activities like the sixth grade dance, class trips, singing at the corus, play dates with Steen School, field day, etc. I am so happy Melissa was able to participate in all of it!!
There is also going to be another Battle of the Bands fundraiser on June 4th at the VFW in Bogota. I am sorry I do not have all the details, Melissa forgot to give me the flyer that has been handed out at the school. As soon as I recive it, I will post the details.
Her next MRI is scheduled for sometime in July. I will let you know when I have a definite date.
Well, it is very late and I just finished helping put pictures together for Melissa's yearbook. I just wanted to give a brief update. I will try to update soon.

Sunday, April 25, 2004 9:17 AM CDT

Hi All!!! The good news is in.........Melissa had another MRI on April 23rd, and it came back clean with NO regrowth!!! Thank you for all of your prayers! Continue to keep Melissa on your prayer list, she will be having an MRI every 2-3 months for the next two years. If all goes well after the 2 years, then she will get her MRI's spread out more and more.
Melissa also finished her last round of chemo. YAY!!! She still takes the Bactrim for the next 6 months. This prevents a certain type of pneumonia that you can get if you are taking chemo. It's just a precaution.
Melissa feels great and is enjoying softball. She is also looking forward to the trips she will be taking. On May 1-7th, Hack. Med. Cntr./Tomorrow's Children Inst. will be taking Melissa to Washington DC. She is very excited about this trip. The end of June will be the trip to Maine.
I am sorry I have not been able to update the photo album lately, but my DSL is down I can only use the dial up and my aol. My computer does not have enough memory to download the pictures, but Melissa's does, but she has the DSL and we need it to change the pictures. I hope we can get it working soon, I have soooo many new pictures to put on this web page!!
The show Diagnosis Cancer will be airing on April 28th. on channel NJN. I am not sure of the time, but I will let you know soon.
That is all for now, I hope to give another update soon. Thanks again for all of your prayers.
With Love, Hugs, & Prayers,
Patty and Family

Saturday, April 3, 2004 8:22 AM CST

Hello again!! He is another quick update: Melissa will be having her final round of chemo on April 6th. She will be having another MRI on April 23rd. Once she is finished with her chemo, she will be having MRI's every 2-3 months for the next two years. Provided there is no regrowth, 2-3 months will turn into 4, then 5, 6, etc. Please continue to keep Melissa in your prayers and in any prayer group that you know of. I really believe the power of prayer helps. I have also found out that eventually we will be able to fund specifically for Glioblastoma Research at Hackensack Medical Center. I will give you more details once they are given to me. Also, Diagnosis cancer will be aired on April 28th. That is the show that me and the children were going to be part of. The children were in a movement therapy portion of the documentary, however, I am not sure if it was cut out or not. You can catch me in the studio audience. It was an interesting show, however it did not cover the type of cancer that Melissa has, it was directed more toward the cancers which have made prognosis progress over the last few years. I will give you more details about the show when I receive them.
Melissa will be starting up with Softball soon and she is looking forward to playing. Dr. Thompson gave no restrictions. She will also be having a fun filled summer of activities! Hackensack Medical Center/Tomorrows Children Institute will be taking Melissa on a trip to Washington DC in May She is very excited and cannot wait to go. Also, through the hospital connections, we will all be able to take that trip to Maine that we were not able to make since finding out about Melissa's diagnosis. There is a camping trip to Maine for children diagnosed with brain tumors and their families. Also, there is also a summer camp that both Melissa and Anthony will be attending- the camp is called: Happiness is Camping. The siblings are alowed to attend also, so both are very happy and cannot wait to have some fun! We have been very fortunate that the hospital has all of these programs that they are in connection with. It really does help give us all something to look forward to. Thanks again Hackensack Med. Cnt/Tomorrows Children !!!!!! Melissa just had her 6th grade class trip recently. I was able to attend. We had so much fun. They took a trip over to NYC to see the broadway play, The Beauty and the Beast. What a blast! Also, we went to get a bite to eat at the Hard Rock Cafe`, and there was also a hands on workshop that the children were allowed to participate in. They were able to do some role playing and acting at a Studio Workshop. While they were there, they met one of the actors from the Beauty and the Beast...the Cheese Grater/Fork. He plays both parts! I will be posting some pictures of that trip in the photo album.
I am going to end here for now.
With Love, Hugs, & Prayers,
~Patty~

Friday, March 26, 2004 0:05 AM CST

Hello again! This will be a very short update since Melissa has a doctor visit tomorrow. I will try to update more current info afterward. I did not add any current pictures yet, I will try to get some more soon.
The 5th round of chemo was not so great, but Melissa is still doing very well. Her 6th round will start again on April 6th. There will be another MRI coming up, and I will probably find out the exact date tomorrow.
Anthony qualified for the States in wrestling, he came in 3rd at the State Qualifier in Lodi, but did not place at the State Tourn. in Union. He had one win and two losses He still wrestled very well and we are very proud of him.
I went back to work part time since Melissa has been doing so well. My hours are perfectly coordinated with Melissa and Anthony's schedules. They will be starting up with baseball and softball soon. Melissa has always played Softball in the past and wants to play again this season.
I am going to end here for now. Luv to all! Please keep Melissa in your prayers.
~Patty~

Monday, March 1, 2004 9:06 AM CST

Hello All!!
I am sorry it took so long to update Melissa's web page!!! I have added some new photos. The pictures that I have placed on the "Home Page" are various photos of Melissa throughout her childhood. I was going through her baby pictures for her 6th grade yearbook and I could not resist putting them on the web!! She was and still is a BEAUTY!!! I have also updated the photos in the "Photo Album" so take a look. I finally developed the pictures from the Battle of the Bands Fundraiser. I put them in the photo album. I have also changed the color of this page to green for St. Patty's day since Melissa does have Irish in her from the Paternal side. Melissa's grand ma in heaven had some Irish in her.

Melissa has been doing very well and still has lots of energy. Her 5th dose of Chemo will start on March 9th. (her dad's birthday, by the way is March 9th) We will also be in the documentary for Hackensack Medical Center which will be taped on March 2nd at NJN in Trenton. We will be in the Movement Therapy portion of the documentary, to show all the wonderful support groups that are offered by Tomorrows Children. The show will be called "Diagnosis Cancer". I will give details of the show once I receive them so that you all can watch it when it airs. I do not know much details yet since we were not actually interviewed, but part of the Therapy offered in the video.
Melissa has also received a LETTER OF COMMENDATION, once again for her efforts and achievement in school this marking period! Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!! Mrs. Breiner, her teacher is extremely proud of Melissa and let me know this once again at the Science Fair on February 27th. I will also put some pictures of the Science Fair in the photo album.

Also, a special thank you to the following people for all the recent support you have given Melissa and our family....Gloria Corrigan (The Goddess, who by the way has recently joined as a chemo card angel and is awaiting an assignment), The Princess Patrice, Debbie's Place, Clients of Hairs Our Kas-El, Lynn Demetrakis, Gary Nelson, Palermos in Bergenfield, The Rotary Club of Bogota/Ridegefield Park,Margret O'Neil, Dr. Denigris, All the Chemo Angels, Cathy Wiggins (and her adorable son, Devin) Jenny Boyce, And Tomorrows Children's Fund at Hackensack University Medical Center. Thank you All!
And to the Valentine Chemo Angels: Cheri Andriopoulous, Kathy Flippo, May Laing, and Angel Val. (I hope that I mentioned all of them) Thank you for making Melissa's Valentines Day special!

I also wanted to add a little something about Melissa's brother Anthony, who at this point has pushed a side lately and has not been given as much attention as Melissa has.
A big thankyou to our family members who have sent "get well wishes" to Anthony after the minor surgery that he just went through. His recovery was very quick, and he has been pain free, and.......
We are proud to Announce that Anthony has just won the gold medal and is the District Champ in the 95 lb. weight class at the wrestling tournament in Elmwood Park where they held the wrestling Districts. He is now qualified for the Twin County Junior Wrestling League Regional Tournament on Sunday, March 7th, at Hackensack High School. If you are free on that day, come and see our little champ in action!!!

Ok, well that is all for now....Hopefully I will not have you waiting as long for the next update!

With Love, Hugs, Kisses, & Prayers,
The Ragusa Family

Great News!!!! Melissa had an MRI early this morning, Sun. Feb., 8th.
Dr. Thompson was at the Hospital today and looked at her scans and called us to let us know that her MRI looked beautiful with no signs of regrowth!!
Your prayers definitely do help, so keep up the good work!
She will be getting an MRI every 2-3 months. So keep praying.
Melissa will be starting her 4th round of chemo on Tuesday the 10th after her bloodwork. Wish her luck for this 4th round and pray all goes as well as the last 3.

Wow, that was a quick month! January seemed to fly by too fast. On January 17th, the son of one of Melissa's former teachers, Mrs. Martin, put together a Battle of the Band Benefit for Melissa. Mort and his Band members from MIDDLE VIEW, along with the Gilbert Family and the following bands: Absence of Fear, Rough Edges, & Stalemate, jammed into the night at the VFW in Bogota. Thank you all!!! And, I would like to that EVERYONE who helped out at the door and helped make this benefit happen. You are all very special friends that make the town of Bogota just a little more special. Thanks for being their for our family time and time again. Also, special thanks to Susan Fries who helped out with some necessary equiptment! You can view Middle View's website at: www.middleview.com I also took some pictures that night, but it was not with my digital camera. Since I am still waiting to get them developed, I will post some more pictures in the future. But for now, I took a picture off of their website. Click on view photos.

We would also like to thank the Rotary Club of Bogota/Ridgefield Park. Their generosity extended a brand new computer to Melissa. I will get some pictures of Melissa with the computer soon. Thanks a bunch!

I changed Melissa's MRI date from 1-31-04 to FEBRUARY 8th so that Melissa would be able to attend the Play in New York City with her GirlScout Troop to see The Lion King. Melissa had a great time. Dr. Thompson also wanted to change her date for the 4th dose of chemo until after the MRI, so she will be starting again on FEB. 10TH. It's that time again for the EXTRA PRAYERS. I really do believe that this has helped. Melissa has been doing so well up to now, with the exception of some minor discomforts. Her blood labs are all within normal limits. My amazing daughter! Melissa also has a new Chemo Angel. Debra needed to leave the program for now. Melissa's new Angel is Cathy W. Melissa enjoys receiving the mail in anticipation to hearing from Cathy and Jenny B.

More thanks to Lynn Demetrakis, Debbies Place, Luka's, Hairs our Kas-El Clients, & Master Pizza.

I am going to end this Journal for now, and I will try to update it alot sooner the next time. I still want to get some new pictures to put in the photo album.

With Love, Hugs, Kisses, & Prayers,
Patty

I hope everyone enjoyed their Holidays! I know Melissa and Anthony did! Thanks to many of you who helped our family make it so special! Special thanks to Melissa's Chemo Angels and her new Holiday Chemo Angels: Debra K., Jenny B., Tonya, Katelyn, & Shayne R., Louanne S. & Char C. You have all made Melissa's Holiday special and gave her something to look forward to everyday.
I also wanted to thank Lynn Demetrakis, Luka's, Debbies Place, and Hair's our Kas-El clients. You have prepared some very special meals and it was very much appreciated!
Hackensack Medical Center also supplied the children with gifts that were donated to the hospital by various charities. Thank you!!! I am so sorry if I did not get a Holiday card out to everyone. I have been so busy and have been writing them out whenever I had a chance during the last few weeks.
Overall, Melissa has handled this second round of chemo very well. Except for our emergency room visit on Dec. 26th. Melissa was running a fever. All her lab tests came back fine, so she was given Motrin and an IV of antibiotics and then released. They said it may have been viral.
Melissa starts her 3rd round of chemo on January 8th. She will also be having another MRI on January 31st. She has also managed to loose about 7-10 lbs. of that Decadron weight. She is fitting back into her old clothes again and has gained more confidence back. Her hair is even starting to grow back!!
You can visit the photo album to view some new pictures that I have added and also go back to view the past journal entries. I will try to post some more pictures soon. Don't forget to sign her guestbook!
Good Bye for now,
With Love, Hugs, Kisses and Prayers,
Patty and Sal

We are back!!!!!!!!! You can view the new photos of our trip in the photo album.
Donna and Kevin from Make-A-Wish Foundation of Union, NJ, presented Melissa with her wish to have a vacation in Jamaica. Melissa fulfilled her wish by staying at the Wyndham Rose Hall Beach Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica. The trip was from December 1st to the 6th. The resort had a lazy river with a three story slide that we all enjoyed floating in each day, except for the time Melissa was stung by a bee! We rode horses on the land and then into the ocean! Next, we swam with the dolphins. Melissa and Anthony took a trip into the sky parasailing over the beautiful blue ocean. We went on the banana boat and also enjoyed the resorts entertainment at night. The resort also had a Sponge Bob Splash Party that Melissa and Anthony participated in. They had green slime dumped on them at the end of the activities....only a child can enjoy that!!!!!!! YIKES! And, they did! The entertainment seemed endless......until we arrived back to the snow!
Melissa's trip was so complete, we could not ask for more. We are very thankful for this wonderful opportunity that Make-A-Wish Foundation gave to our precious Melissa.

On Sunday, we attended the Holiday Party given by Hackensack Medical Center-Tomorrows Children. It was held at the Glen Point Marriott in Teaneck. It was a fun filled day with clowns, characters, music, dancing, caracter drawings, gifts, etc. A great big thankyou to the staff at Tomorrows Children for inviting us!

Melissa will be starting her second round of chemo on December 10th. Please continue to pray for her. We are also praying that Melissa handles this next treatment as well as she has in the past. She is our brave little trooper!!!!

The Ragusa Family wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday.
All our Love and Prayers to everyone.

It's time to give you an update! You can still go back to view past journal entries.
We are off to Jamaica!!! We leave early Monday morning. December 1st. We will be back on Dec. 6th. Melissa chose a vacation in Jamaica for her Make-A-Wish trip. We will be staying at Wyndham Rose Hall Resort. It has one of those lazy rivers at the resort that Melissa loves! When we get back, we will tell you all about it.
Thank you Make-A-Wish Foundation and Donna & Kevin from Make-A-Wish for this wonderful opportunity to put a smile on Melissa & Anthony's face!!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Thank you all for the support and prayers you have given Melissa and our family. Please continue to Pray for Melissa.

Hi All!!!
This is a new update, you can still view the past journal entries. I have updated the photo album with some new pictures and some old ones.
First off, Melissa has been doing very well. She has some minor side effects such as nausea. But overall, the little trooper's personality still shines through!! Today, Melissa received an award certificate from her teacher, Mrs. Breiner, for displaying good citizenship and being helpful to others. Once again, we are proud of you Melissa!
We are going to have a busy week. Melissa's Aunt Debbie is up from Florida to visit and celebrate Thanksgiving. We will have to pack for Melissa's Make-A-Wish trip for December 1st through the 6th. Melissa chose Jamaica for her wish. Donna and Kevin from Make-A-Wish came to the house tonight to shower Melissa with gifts. They are two wonderful people who should be commended for helping out with the Make a Wish Foundation. Sal and I would like to thank Donna, Kevin, and the Make a Wish Foundation for Making this wish possible for Melissa. Anthony is also looking forward to the vacation.
We also want to thank everyone for keeping Melissa in your prayers. All of the support that our family has been receiving is greatly appreciated! Our graditude extends beyond what words on a web page can express.
I will end off by saying, All our Love, Gratitude & Prayers to All!
Patty and Sal

Hi All! It's time for another update. You can still go back to check past journal entries.
Melissa just finished her first round of Chemo on Sunday. The little trooper is still going strong. Her only side effects so far seem to be acid reflux and getting bothered by certain odors such as cleaning products and food smells.
We are still waiting on Dr. Thompson to give his final approval on Melissa's Make-A-Wish trip. Melissa has chosen a trip to Jamaica. Make A Wish has already checked on the availability for December 1 to the 6th. Melissa and Anthony are both looking forward to the trip.
Grand Ma & Pop Pop from Florida just came up for a visit for Melissa's cousin Krista's first Birthday. We had a chance to visit with some family at Aunt Kassy's house this weekend. It was nice to see cousin Linda, Ashley, & Christopher again. We are hoping to spend another up coming Easter at their house. Also getting another chance to visit with Aunt Nay Nay, Uncle Joe & Amanda is also a treat. Grand Ma & Pop Pop bought Melissa a Peruvian Guinea Pig before they left to go back to Florida. Melissa was estatic by the new surprise pet. She named him "Chip" because she said he looks like a Chipmonk! He is cute.
We are also looking forward to a visit from Aunt Debbie who will be coming up from Florida for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving will be at our house with Aunt Kassy's family, Aunt Nay Nay's family, Aunt Debbie, possibly Grand Ma, & us.
I wanted to thank all of you for signing Melissa's guestbook, you have all said some very nice things and Melissa looks forward to reading them. Thank you for keeping Melissa in your prayers. Please add our Aunt Rina to your prayers as well who is currently in the hospital. Also to cousin Leah, you are in our prayers.
Those of you who know Terry Martin, Gail's husband, please reach out your love and prayers. Terry is also going through his chemo treatment and is having bad side effects from all the medications he is on. Please let them know that you are also thinking of them. They are a wonderful family and I love them dearly.
I would also like to thank the Ruggiero Family. They made a contribution with the 50/50 money won from Melissa's benefit to the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation in New York in honor of Melissa. The Ruggiero's wished the money to go to research. Melissa's hospital at Tomorrow's Children also have a program for brain tumor research that Melissa will be part of in their study.
Melissa received her first package from her Chemo Angel today. Her Chemo Angel's name is Debra. Debra put a big smile on Melissa's face when she opened up the box of "goodies" that her Angel sent.
I will stop here and save more for my next update. Love, Hugs, Kisses and Prayers to All!!!
From the Ragusa Family

I added some new holiday pictures to the photo album. Way too cute!

Hi All! I just wanted to give everyone a new update as to whats been going on.
Melissa had an MRI on Tuesday. Dr. Thompson looked at the pictures and feels confident that there was not any re-growth of the tumor. He is still awaiting on the report. Melissa started her chemo last night. She will be taking 5 doses of Temodar and will have 3 weeks off before starting her next dose. She will have 6 months of chemo. She is also taking Zofran to combat nausea. Dr. Thompson said her blood count should be ok for the first 2 treatments. Her blood count was all with in normal limits during her radiation treatments.
Melissa has a wonderful staff at Hackensack University Medical Center/Tomorrow's Children. They have all been so wonderful to all of us. Especially Dr. Thompson (He makes us laugh), Margaret O'Neill, Ann Stiefbold, and Peter Denigreis. We have been working very close to all of them and have been such a wonderful support to our family. Margaret has given us tickets for the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. We went on November 3rd. It was one awesome show and we all had a great time. Thanks again Margaret!
Make-A-Wish Foundation visited us at our house last night. Donna & Kevin greeted the children with Miami Dolphins baseball caps. (Both Melissa & Anthony are Miami Fans) Melissa wore her hat to school today. She is too cute! We discussed a trip to Jamaica for the first week in December. Donna is going to check on availability today and get back to me. Dr. Thompson wants the travel to be finished before Melissa's next dose of chemo.
Yesterday was Parent-Teacher conference at Bixby School. Melissa achieved Second Honors!!!!!!!!! We are so proud of her and so are both her teachers, Mrs. Breiner & Mrs. Gasselberty (I hope I spelled her name correctly!). The whole staff at Bixby School has also been such a comfort to our family. The principal, Mrs. Gattuso, School Nurse, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Demetrakis, & Mrs. Breiner have all been especially helpful. Thank you all and the Bixby school staff.
Just a reminder, please write your letters to help support passing a childhood cancer stamp. If the stamp gets passed, it will help fund research. Every little bit helps for a cure! You can find the information on the web site: www.kidscancerstamp.org
Also, any future donations to our family can be written out to Share USA or to Melissa Ragusa. They are a non-profit community based organization that helps us cash our checks and will give a tax deductible receipt to all persons who give our family a donation in check form. Once they cash the check, they give the money back to our family. The P.O. Box is still the same: The Ragusa Family, P.O. Box 84, Bogota, NJ 07603 Thanks again for all of you who have helped, it was greatly appreciated.
Feel free to sign Melissa's guest book and look at the pictures, I will be updating them periodically.
Thanks once again for all of your prayers, love & support!
Love,
Patty

Me and Melissa have just returned home from South Carolina where we were visiting Lannette and Dakota. I met Lannette through the squirrel tales web site and we had so much in common that we became very good friends. Dakota is 12 and just finished his radiation and chemo treatments. He is a cutie just like Melissa!!! Dakota also has a web site with Caringbridge and that is how we found out about making Melissa this web site. We wish we had more time to visit with them, but we will have to wait until possibly the summer. We also had a great time with Samantha, Dakota's sister and Ted, Lannette's husband. Everyone was so great to us!

I also wanted to express my thanks to all my friends and family, many of the residents of Bogota, The Staff at Bixby School, Debbie's Place, Luka's, Vitales, Jamie Meyer,Lynn Demetrakis, Josephine Ferlise, Anita Viaud, Donna Ruggiero, Leslie Merse, Mary Jane Clarke, Susan Fries, Jody & Ron Ossi, Mike Dosher & all his friends, Jennifer Freel, Judy O'Donnel, Jim Moore & Friends, Greg & Noelle, Gary Nelson-American Legion & friends, Donna & Ed Brugger, Kathy Souci,Raysa & Jose Peralvo, Father Terri, Gary Senor, Ellie Gray, Mo & Steve Prestifillippo, Tracey Schettino, Tip of the Boot Restauraunt, Angelo's Pizza, Bogota VFW, Associated Wholesale Floral Supply, Kitchen Magician, Stu Spitz, Donald Versace, Queen Anne Bakery, Palermo's Bakery, Cosco, VST Travel Direct,Lithotone Printers, Cardi-Yaks, Susan's Music Factory,SMT, Hairs Our Kas-El, Staff at Palermo's Plumbing, My cousins, Aunts, Uncles, Sisters, Mother, Father, Sal's cousins, Aunts, Uncles,& friends of all our family members, all people who donated for the tricky tray, all people who have extended their prayers, all who have given us meals, and extended their hearts and friendship, There are tooooooo many people to thank, and you and I know who you are. Most of the names listed helped put together a Benefit for our family which was held on November 1st. It was a wonderful Dinner & Show and the support was very overwhelming. I am sorry I did not get to thank each and every one of you personnally. Many of the people listed have helped us prior to the benefit when we came home from the hospital and extended their generosity and prayers. Many of you are continuing to help our family and for that we are also thankful.
We would also like to thank the friends and family members of Kathy Buquicchio. Our deepest sympathy and gratitude to you all.
Another thanks to a wonderful foundation called Share USA.
