It was wonderful to see you at the reunion. An unexpected surprise. I am using Jerry's computer which is something I never do. Had a great trip to Italy, my seat companion was from Redondo Beach. Small World. Say hi to Eva for us.

Thanks for the continued posts.
Hopefully I will be able to connect with you one of these days in PV!

(I wrote this same message to you, Dena, on your FB page.)

I am writing you because someone told me about your experience and your recovery from TBI. My brother sustained a severe TBI 2 1/2 years ago and is on a similar slow path of recovery.

I am writing because
1) I wanted to cheer you on in your recovery! This is hard work and every little step of healing takes a lot of energy. And by what I see on your Caringbridge, it sounds like you have been giving it your all! High five.

and 2) I wanted to connect about treatment options you have experienced. I wondered if you would be open to my family asking you questions about stem cell and about other alternative treatments you have worked with. As you know, there are no clear or easy answers about how to best heal after brain injury and we on the healing path are forced to find our own resources, ideas, treatments. And the best resources we have found are other families who have been through this experience.

If you are interested in connecting, you can email me.

Happy 2013! Where has time gone? Thank you for updating the site once and awhile. I think of all of you often and am always hoping and praying for the best. We are enjoying the warmth of South Carolina, and our boys, now 10 & 11 are growing like weeds also. I'm sure I would hardly recognize Caden now - they grow so fast. I'm glad to hear Dena is riding horses and eating better. Our love and prayers to all of you!!

Hi Brehms & Tobby!

How are you & the puppy? I don't know where summer went - we too recently got a puppy- 'Allie' (short for Allie-gator :).
She is chocolate lab with a bit of gator in her.
Please keep us posted on when you return to PV - I hope to see you on my next visit south. I am trying to guilt Amir into planning a mini reunion (small subset of classmates) next summer - might be fun for Dena if we pull it together.

Hope you are well

Dena,
I am so glad you are doing well with the horseback riding and really hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Horses just seem to listen a lot better than humans and the plus is they don't talk back they just listen!!!

Keep up the great work and keep sitting up straight! I am sure you will have some visits from Dana and the little ones when they arrive and how much fun will that be!!! I am so excited for her!

Hello again Brehms! I'm so excited to hear about your puppy!! (I just caught up on some old posts of yours). If you need any training help, or need to borrow a crate or an "ex-pen" please don't hestitate to contact me. I've got anything you could possibly need in the dog department. We can also offer a "puppy play date" at our house in the backyard (which is wheelchair accessible-- Dena might enjoy it!) All the best,

Hello Brehms! I'm so glad to hear you're back in PV, we've been thinking of you and wanting to reconnect. I love the photo of Dena and Caden. I want you to know that I have never forgotten the conversation we had about your desire for a community optimized for the needs of people with disabilities that is located close to medical and other (physical therapy, etc) services, and am keeping my ears open. I did read an article about a couple who started such a place near Santa Barbara, optimized for people with autism, and I'm wondering if speaking to those people might be a good networking contact for you that might lead to something interesting (either a community already formed or forming, or connections to others seeking the same concept who might be able to help build it). Dennis and I have taken sailing lessons since we last saw you, and have joined the Redondo Beach Sailing Club. Thank you for that wonderful night at the KHYC. We hope to see you again soon (we're both traveling a lot for business right now but would love to schedule a dinner with you. Please give Dena my best.

Hi Brehm Family~

Thanks for continuing to update the site Mr Brehm. I will certainly let you know of anything I learn of that might be something to pursue in regards to improving Dena's condition. It breaks my heart to read about Caden grasping his mom's condition - thank heavens he has the BEST grandparents a kid could hope for at his side.

Think about you often! Wish I was heading to Oregon with you bc it's just miserable here in Texas! I think we are going to break every heat record that's on the books this week. Hope the reunion was a fun time with the old pv high schoolers! Am trying to figure out how to get out to see you guys this fall. You've all been in my thoughts. Hope your 4th of July was good. Naples had lots of fireworks, but many places I'm told did not have them due to a dry season. We're having rain everyday so the grass is green. Johnny-boy turned 50 years old and we had a surprise birthday party for him in Miami. McCormicks and some of the ol gang from yesteryear were asking about you. My brother's cancer is back with a vengence so I'll probably be traveling to Illinois this summer. Early September I leave for Poland with the group from church. So happy you all are able to spend some time in Calif., but I know it's hard to leave Caden. My love and prayers to each of you.

Mr. & Mrs. Brehm,
You are so amazing. I know you must feel the love and support that we all send you. Dena is such a gift. My daughters love to hear "Dena Stories" (I think because they usually implicate me too!) We have so many great memories. The simple times of playing outside and creating adventure. Thinking about our life in Lunada Bay can always make my heart warm. I am going to drive up to PV when you are here. I miss you all so much!! God Bless you all.

Aha-- just found this site! So sorry we missed you all when you were in PV-- I look forward to meeting Caden next time. Love the photos. I loved how Dena's face was so relaxed and happy in one of them (with Caden). I just saw the photo of Dena from kindergarten-- that is EXACTLY how I remember her. That's the age she was when I babysat that summer. Adorable, truly precious. I'll bet Caden has that same sparkle. Looking forward to seeing you here when you return.

Now, that is awesome that you are doing some traveling! It's stopping to smell the roses whether they are in PV, Calif. or in Oregon. I'm sure Dena is enjoying the traveling with mom and dad, too. So many just get stuck in a rut day in and day out. As long as you are able to get the physical therapy needed for Dena the WORLD should be your playground. We (40 plus attended)had a great reunion in Lake Geneva.Your names were brought up often with hopes that the next reunion will be one you can make bringing both your grandchildren. That'll be in two years, but we have no idea who the host family will be yet; it's good to gather for life-loving reasons. Enjoy your travels back to UT. My love to all of you. My brother and his wife are coming for a visit in September. Michael's cancer is in remission so we have much to thank God for these days. For every bead on my rosary I pray for someone; Dena is right there with all those I love and remember. Connie

Give my best wishes to Caden - hard to believe he is six already. Well the family reunion is over. It was fabulous and all of you were missed. We shared many wonderful stories and had a lot of laughs. I sent you pictures via shutterfly. Lynn, et al didn't attend, nor Natalie and family. Natalie was moving into her new home. I'm at my brother, Michael's house. Was supposed to fly out from Milwaukee on Friday, but airport flooded and it closed. Nature dictates sometimes. So now I fly out on Sunday. My visit with Michael is wonderful; the cancer is taking it's toll, but he's had some great days which I am so fortunate to share. He even took me out on the lake (driving a bit faster than I like!) It sounds like Dena's day is filled with activity. My prayers are alway with her. Thank you so much, Bob, for your postings. I know some days you just don't feel like doing them. It's easy for all of us to get wrapped up in our own lives and not reach out. You are a beautiful person. My love to you and Eva.

Dena, Bob, & Eva,
The first time I ever really took note of how people band together and pull for someone was when Dena was in the accident. I remember watching the "hit counter" on the site go from hundreds to thousands to tens of thousands in such a short amount of time. All of those people were thinking of her, praying for her, and sending positive thoughts her way. It was really very moving to know that there is so much good in the world, so many people who just want to help. I was reminded of that once again when last week my friend's dad went missing (just 9 days before his daughter was to be married). The same kind of love and support has been outpoured on her and her family. After an exhaustive and grueling search of the 1500 acre park where his car was found abandoned, there is still no sign of him. I know there are so many good people who read this site. Please send some of that positive energy to my friend's family. They really need it. If you'd like to read the story, you can click on the below link:

http://www.kansascity.com/2010/07/12/2079457/search-is-on-for-larry-schnackenberg.html

Thank you for allowing me to travel on this journey with you. I think it has made me a stronger and more faithful person today.

Much love to you all,
Jennifer

So glad you're back in PC. Just had a client that we are working on their house up there. She said the weather was perfect last week, a bit cold, which compared to Tejas right now, could be in the 90's! Happy birthday to the little man. Uncle Bob,
Thanks for updating us. Sorry to hear Dean is having trouble, hope the new tubes do the trick. We will keep her and you guys in our prayers extra special on the 23rd! We (GB, John & myself) are all here in Orlando at Lynn's for David's graduation. Connie left yesterday. David graduated Wed., then we celebrated Lynn's b-day Thurs (while everyone was here, eventhough it isn't until 6-19) and today is John's birthday. Cousin Leslie is in Orlando with Dr. Michael, his daughter and granddaughter so we will get together with them tonight. That is the news from this side of the Brehm clan. We all send our love and prayers. Miss ya'll (couldn't help throwing in that southern "ya'll").

Hi Mr Brehm~

Your comment, 'Please remember Dena as the wounderful young lady you knew and she still is a sweetheart and has a great attitude' strikes a chord with us all. She will always be remembered as one of a VERY few people on this planet that NOBODY had an unkind thing to say about. That is they way I describe Dena to anyone who didnt know her. And she will always be thought of that way. I know your posts are touching many of us. We appreciate you taking the time to keep us up to date. I hope I can sneak down to PV before you depart in June. Do you know what date you will be leaving for UT?

So many share the sadness of the day Dena was in the accident leaving her with brain trauma, but we cannot dwell on yesterday,or worry about tomorrow. All we have is today. It will be 5 years in September that your brother, my sweetheart died. We are ever joyfilled to have Dena alive. She has more spirit than many of us. She'll always be your 'little girl' Bob. It's a daddy thing! I am so hoping that all of you will be joining us at the G & C Reunion in Wisconsin this summer. We all love you so much. That is the other thing I remember from 5 years ago - Dena was planning on coming to the reunion and having Caden meet all his cousins! Safe travels going back to Utah in June. All of you are in my prayers. Connie

Bean, bob , Eva and munchkin-
not a day goes by that I don't think about you my friend. Came across that old collage you made me for a birthday back in the day, all filled with our semester in London and wild eurorail tales... Ha!
I hadn't looked at it in years and couldn't believe I still had it!
Too many good times and laughter. I'm glad we can still laugh together. I'll remember the old times and remind you(yes, I know, how friggin scary is that... Considering the brain cells we burned up back then! )
miss you and hang in there
hope you are enjoying the California sunshine, sea salt wind on your face and friends from the pv days !
Love you-

Hello Dena (and Bob and Eva too). I stumbled on your Facebook page thru Dana's, which led me to this site. I am still absorbing this news about my sweet old friend from the U of A and trying to process your journey over these past five years. The last time I saw you must have been at least ten years ago in Park City at the Sundance Festival. It was so great to literally run into your smiling face on Main Street that day. It seems that you are back in California now. I live just up the street in Westwood with my wife and three little daughters. It would be great to come see you if you would be up for a visit from an old college buddy. Perhaps I could even dig up some nutty photos from out time in London (Napoleon anyone?)..where I also remember meeting your kind mom. Email me at this address and let me know if you would be up for it. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your awesome family. Hope to hear from you. Love, --Mike Clements (aka Clem)

Wow- back in PV! That is so great to hear. It will be great to see you all during SoCal visits (& as you'd imagine they tend to happen more frequently that UT trips). My brother Tom recently volunteered at Horse Program on Kauai & I have heard of one here in the Bay Area. So if the on near PV doesnt open up, there are other options :) Thanks very much for making time to do the posts Mr Brehm.

Thank you again for a great visit last week. I had such fun hanging out with you guys, laughing, telling funny stories and having dinner. It felt like old times !
Dena seemed to be in good spirits. I think she is glad to be back in PV by the ocean! As always, I am in awe of the three of you and your dedication and love that remains such a big part of her rehabilitation. She is so lucky to have such amazing parents and a wonderful brother (even if you do still bug her sometimes Robby :)....I wish I was closer so that I could visit more often, but please know you are always in my thoughts and prayers !! love you, Dana oxoxo

Dena, I know you have got to be enjoying sunny California and happy to be out of the snow. We did have some cold days in Naples, Fl. with plants even freezing! Looks like it's getting back to the 70's and 80's now. My brother, Michael and his wife are here from Illinois for the winter. We are heading down to Key West for a week to visit my daughters and great grandson. Hope to take a boat out to Ft. Jefferson. Enjoy your time in CA! I love and pray for you and your family daily. Jodi Sharp just sent me the link to this web site. I am so sorry for the difficult times. I remember living across the street from you all as a very young child. Cops and robbers, kick the can, walking to school and back together. Dena and I had matching striped dresses. And the day of all days.....I wouldn't stop showing off about how I was going to be a flower girl in my uncles wedding. So dena grabbed my lunch box [ I think it was mine and not hers] and she hit me on my head with it. It's so funny now. I actually treasure that memory. Jodi was sharing a little about Dena's accident and how she has changed. You are super hero's to her now. What a life altering thing. God bless you all!

Happy New Year 2010! Hope this greeting finds you are on your way to sunny California for some R & R. Dena, that snow in Salt Lake City is good to play in, but not fun for all your daily activities and therapy I'm sure. I've been working at my church a great deal with the holidays. Got in at 2:30 AM from working at the midnight Mass on Christmas eve. Then it was the Feast of the Holy Family on Dec.26th, next came Jan. 1st a Holy Day of Obligation, and now Epiphany where we write the initials of the Three Kings and the year 2010 in chalk above our doorway at home to bless our home the whole year through. Well, if I wasn't at church I'd be getting in trouble somewhere! Enjoyed chatting with Eva while she was in Florida - sorry we couldn't get together. This summer will be the 10th G & C Reunion in Illinois hosted by my brother and his wife. Maybe Caden and Kingston can come and greet all the cousins, Brehms, Mravics, McCormicks,.... this crew is agrowin! Love to all of you for a beautiful 2010.

Loved the new pictures. Thanks Eva! So glad that Dena is moving easier with the new brace after her surgery. I think only time will tell, but sounds like it was a great success!
Hope you guys had a terrific Turkey day! Nerdy was on call for Thanksgiving, so she and Jeff stayed in KC and the boys came down with Mom and Dad. Had a blast! Played laser tag and went to the go cart track...fun, fun!
Dad and the boys are coming in on the 19th and we are heading to New Orleans for the Cowboys/Saints game. My friend knows the owner, so they got us great seats and field passes. The boys are going to FREAK! Heading into KC for the week of Christmas.
Anyhoo, sending warm holiday wishes your way. Love and miss you!

We heard of your touching story of strength, endurance, and hope. We admire you and your perserverence. We are a stranger, but a friend in hope. Have courage like a lion, a heart like a dove, and have fire like a phoenix. The ladies at the peace house in park city suffer from different struggles, yet desire for a better tomorrow everyday. Recently, I found a new analogy of hope. We are like the Pheonix legend. A powerful bird, but burned through the fire, yet reborn through the ashes to be stronger, brighter, and through our sorrow and pain gained empowerment. From our heart, mind, and soul to your heart, mind, and soul. All our love, Peace House.

Dena, you are always in my thoughts and prayers. Naples, Florida is going through the "big chill" with temperatures in the 60's; nice change from the 90's. The snowbirds are coming south sooner with the cold weather in the northern states. Your cousin, Karen(Brehm)Wilson is doing the 60-mile walk this weekend (Oct. 23rd)bringing attention to the fight against cancer. All the Brehm girls are pretty awesome! You included! I'm sure Caden is getting hyped up for Halloween. Our church does a "trunk or treat" on Oct. 25th in it's parking lot. It's a safe environment and all the vehicles taking part provide some sort of game besides treats for the kids. My granddaughter's doing a witch lemonade potion with dry ice - was a real hit last year. Keep snuggled in your warm-up suits as the chilly weather comes your way. You are forever in my prayers.

Hi all! It was great seeing Bob in Naples and making time from his busy schedule with the apartments and house in Cape Coral to visit with us. Bob just lights up when he talks about Dena; we got to hear all about Dana's wedding and it sounds like Dena was a jewel. Loved the pictures, too. All the hard work with therapy is worth it when you see the improvements. Bob, you are the best dad and grampa ever. Happy Father's Day and I know you are anxious to get back to Utah and your little girl! Of course Caden wants you back right now - you keep the sparkle in his eyes! Eva, what a fantastic email you sent to me about "life." I hope you sent it to many. If not, you may want to include it in CaringBridge. It makes us think and it also brought smiles. Dena, you a loved so very much! Your cousin John just turned 48 and Lynn is going to be 49 this Friday. You sure have some "old" cousins.

Dear Bob and Eva,
While April 28th remains an emotionally important day in our collective history, it is not that day alone in the year that we think of Dena and her progress. She is in our daily thoughts and prayers - as are you. It sounds like you all have a very busy agenda set and we wish you continued strength, love and fortitude and look forward to many more reports of our Chelsea Road girl's recovery, step by step.

Eating yogurt, apple sauce, oatmeal and potatoes sounds like real positive results of therapy. The electronic bike stimulating her right leg sounds encouraging also - I remember you telling me about some other thing she had to kick that leg forward was a terrible experience and Dena hated it. How long before you all head back to Salt Lake City? Prayers are forever coming your way especially during this Lenten season when we are reminded of great suffering. Bob and Eva you may think you are just ordinary parents doing what ordinary parents would do. But we all know you are EXTRAORDINARY parents - Dena has come so far in her recovery because of your research and going down paths that is unfamiliar ground for most. Remain strong. Love and hugs to all of you!

It sounds like the therapy is going well. Go Dena! It's probably hard to see changes when you are with Dena everyday, but in looking at the photo gallery, Dena's progress is notable. May you find comfort in the Lord watching over all of you. I just returned from San Antonio visiting grand babies and also visited my brother who is receiving treatment at MD Anderson in Houston.

Hi Dena,

Hope you had a great Birthday. I always think of you this time of year, including Halloween.

Kaelynn was a witch this year--last year she wanted to be an angel. I think I am in trouble as a parent.

Our family is doing well, and we enjoy watching Kaelynn play soccer, this fall. She is scoring lots of goals (and getting the accolades), but we remind her that its the other kids that brought her the ball! Leaves are changing and it is a beautiful time of year. Small but sweet grape harvest, they say. Recent rains will start greening things up.

Recently surfed in Bill Burke's Fall Fest in Cayucos, CA More of a reunion/luau than surf contest. Lots of fun to see the many PV and Central CA faces. Riding the old 1960's jurassic long boards is pretty retarted (because you cannot turn them), but we do it for the love of beer. Darcy was in championship form. Miss you guys!

Hello everyone, I am Dave Mrdutt. I am Bob, Eva, Dena, Caden and of course Mackey the cat's plumber. Bob asked if would share this experience I had with Dena. A little while back I called the Brehm's to ask a question. The phone rang and the answer seemed like I had a bad connection. I kept talking and listening. I was about to hang up when I realized it was Dena who answered the phone. Dena was trying to talk to me. Dean picked up the phone and answered the call. I was so stoked. When I talked to Bob about the experience, he to was surprised and excited. My connection with the family started with my wife Chris. She worked for the family for quite a while, taking care of Dena. She is a CNA. I came along when the water heater and a few other challenges arose.
Our family hopes and prays for Dena's recovery. Best wishes to you all. Bob, Eva, Dena, Christian, Caden and their cat Mackey. Love ya Chris and Dave

Hi to all! It's so great to read your updates, Bob. I know it can't always be easy but we all love to know what is going on with our sweetheart Dena. GB has a conference for work he's attending - near Palos Verdes where you lived in Calif Oct 7,8, & 9th. Church work keeps me busy; I'm on the Pastoral Council and it's very interesting. Fall is here, but our temperatures are still in the 90's. Dena's schedule of therapy and activities is certainly full. God bless you and Eva keeping up with all of it. Dear Brehms - Dena,Eva, Bob and Caden - I think of you so often and carry you in my heart every day. Wish I were more consistant about writing here and sending you much love and hope and prayers -- seems I spin my wheels more as each year passes!!! I loved talking with you, Eva, as Dana and I were speeding down the highway - I threatened to sing to her and she, too, turned up the radio. I'm happy to hear about Dena's progress, even if it is two steps forward and one backward. Her pictures reveal much improvement since I last saw her ---easy for me to see when I am not with her each day. And that beautiful Caden - what a treasure for each of you!!! Enjoy such special moments and remember, there is a world out here rooting for you! Love, Judy

It's been awhile since I last wrote anything. Need a little time to get some stories together. Loved hearing the news about Bean. I'm so glad that she's doing H2O therapy. I just got back from Laguna. Some friends got married on the beach out there. It was fun to be back in California. Every time I go, I think why did I every move from here...then we get on the freeway, and I'm reminded why!
The Eagles are coming into town next weekend. I haven't seen them since the day before I moved and went with Choate. So good memories all around.

Hi family,

I haven't logged on in a while but tonight I enjoyed and was reflecting upon Bob's updates. The story about Dena, Eva, and the radio was so vivid. I pictured them in the navy blue Volvo with the Rolling Stones tongue on the back. Perhaps Eva could hum a good polka? Dana's right--try some music or CD that she might recognize. 80's music, Jimmy Buffett, or something fun and familiar. That might be really good for her memory or thought processing. I know it helps kids, a lot in their development, and of course adults, too. If nothing else, it will create a good vibe. Great to hear Dena excercising some of her free will, again.

The Mid-State Fair is going on in Paso Robles. Our friend from UofA, Saaid Moize came to visit with his VW van, girlfriend and dog. The two of them, Darcy and I saw STP at the Fairgrounds, Saturday night. Scott Weiland, front man of the 90's band said, "You know, it smells like cow sh-- here. That reminds me of Ohio and the barn, and my first ----." He's out there and his music is not meant for all of America, but they rock. Sorry, I digress. Great show and lots of fun in the wine country with our friends. Something about the right music can change moods, thought, and productivity. It also can trigger memories.

Good luck and still thinking about you, in the country.

Take care!

Katie and i Had a fun visit with the whole gang, Eva, Dena, Caden and Christian on saturday. Of course Caden was the center of attention.
Dena was napping most of the time, but i caught her with her eyes open a few times so i know she was listening.

I hope with the warmer weather arriving Dena and Eva and the aide can get outside more, maybe that will motivate Dena. I know it cheers me up when its warm and sunny.

Talked to Pam today in Bali, she sends her love to all

Amazing! You guys are all amazing. It's been said so many times in this guestbook but you probably don't really know how inspirational you are...

Eva ~ the level of commitment you have to Dena's care is beautiful. You deserve a fun day of skiing and I hope the conditions were just perfect for you!

Bob ~ your tenacity in finding the right treatments for Dena is so courageous. I love that you are not willing to give up. Never give up! Dena has come much farther than some thought she would and it is all because you won't back down.

Dena ~ I know you are fighting so hard. Look at you! Talk about strength - you are a picture of it. There must be many times you feel very alone but you are not. We are all still here and we will wait as long as it takes. Celebrate your victories and keep pushing for more.

Sending love, and positive thoughts, and love, and good wishes, and love, and love, and LOVE!

Bob & Eva, My son's girlfriend was in an accident Dec 26th. She is making good progress, but after 2 weeks of therapy, the insurance company is saying she will likely have to move to a long term facility. She has two weeks to show dramatic improvement or she will be moved 3 hrs away. I'm so inspired by Dena. If you have any advice, we'd love to hear from you. Teri

Hi Dena, Eva and Bob,
Glad to hear of some progress and I think increased daylight and warmer temps are always a blessing! Anyways, I wanted to give you feedback on the tempurpedic matress; I had full hip replacement last June, and will need my right one done in time. We got a tempurpedic and it IS GOOD. It is different in that it is not springy. My only complaint is that it gets very HOT. It doesnt "breathe" like a regular matress and I find myself kicking the covers off. Other than that. I wake up without lower back pain, and it is easy on the hip when I sleep on my side. When we first got it I didnt like it, but now I do. Hope this helps, shoot me an email if ya need more feedback.

I had a great time the other day with you all. Dena had just a hard workout and then Lauren and I came over to hang out. She was taking a catnap with the new addition to the house. It gave Bob, Eva, Lauren and I an opportunity to catch up. Then Caden and Dena were up and it was full entertainment in the house. Be a little careful Dena is great at pinching lately. You have to be quicker than she is and she is quick. Today Eva and Lauren and I are going to grab lunch so I will have more to report.

How's the snow? Bet it's super for skiing. I'm in SanAntonio visiting DeDe et al. I fly back to Naples Feb. 20th. Loving seeing the grandkids and it's a nice break from the church work I do. I redid a closet with organizers for DeDe, and doing the usual rearranging of furniture! Mitts just got back from Maine. He was on a "guys only snowmobiling trip." I hope you find an aide soon. Dear Dena and Brehm family,

Happy Valentine's Day to you all. I have been thinking of you guys and got your Christmas Card. I need to respond so that you guys have our home address in Paso Robles. I have been up to my eye balls busy, too.

Billy Burke makes me laugh when he does just about anything, in the Central Coast. He is the original fun raiser. Surfing, playing music, mass producing kids--he does it all. We have a lot fun talking about Dena and family from the LBay days. Poseidons and Spartans formals, Rat Beach, and traveling, too.

That's good that you are promoting the care taker position. Word of mouth is the best way to find good help and to land a job.

You have always been a family with a lot of love. I hope you guys have been enjoying the day.

Dena-
Your journey has become my journey as well. I can relate to you in so many ways; we are about the same age, love the outdoors, and have one son the same age. I am so inspired by your strength and saddend at the same time. The love you have from your family and the love that you give to them is immeasurable. Even though we have never met, I am with you every day. I will catch myself looking at my son and thinking that we are the same in so many ways, I know that you look at your son with the same thoughts but are just not able to express to him in the same ways that I can express to my son. I do believe that the day will come that we can both hug and kiss our little boys while having a playmate together. I know they would get along since I saw the pictures of him with a superhero shirt and a Ninja shirt!

Hi Mr Brehm~

Since you are considering a live-in, I wonder if there are programs overseas that could be tapped into? Whereby someone commits to 1 year or 6 months & in exchange gets housing & some modest pay & gets to experience life in USA? I am not sure where to turn to research this...If I am able to uncover something I will be sure to let you know. Thanks for the updates!

Hi guys - Hope it is not too late to say HAPPY NEW YEAR! We spent a day (yep a day LOL) with my parents at Christmas time... Bob you will love what I did to them... you know it has been a while since they have seen the kids... let's see - 4 inches in Samantha(eye glasses!) and 3 inches for Woody plus braces for both! So I sent the kids up to the front door of the new house and they knocked - when dad answered the door he said YES - Woody said "we heard someone was making Tacos" and my dad said "oh my Gawd Loretta look who is here" - (for those of you that don't know my dad - his Tacos are FAMOUS! and well loved especially by my kids). We spoke a lot about their visit with you and Dena's progress - we are all so happy that you are seeing improvements in Dena. I know how this can bring a breath of fresh air and give you that extra UMPH that you need to make it through the days. As I am sure you have figured out I didn't make it to PC this last summer - Sammy and Joey did - they blew into town...she played softball and they blew outta town! This upcoming summer she most likely will be going to Colorado... but if she is back in pc I will make a special effort to spend a special day with Dena. I am really looking forward to seeing the difference with my own two eyes.

I have heard a bit from Robbie - we have emailed back and forth - and of course I remind him who his first kiss is EVERY time I chat with him! Hey, give this old lady a thrill (yeah yeah I "am" 40 now!) .... Love to all!

Good to hear that Eva and Robby are visiting and warming up in FL. Hopefully the real cold weather won't make you sick Bob! Keep up the great details, I am sure it was a combination of cold weather, new people, and new machinery but Dena is communicating her distaste for it which is good right? ANyway have fun with you football and all the snow and thanks for the update. Keep warm!

July 3rd is a perfect day Matt. I chose the original Dena Day, November 2. I chose April 29 as well so I have two dates on my calendar. I am hoping we can get everyone who reads these posts to chose a date!!

So glad the Diamonds for Dena was a success. Sounds like you had a great time.

Hi all,

I wanted to thank Jeannine and Amir and Darryl for arranging and promoting the "Diamonds are for Dena" fundraiser. I bought 1/3 of the winning ticket and had a great evening at the swanky Elrod house in Palm Springs with family and a few friends.

Mel and Kris (the other 2/3 of the ticket), I hope you get out there. The place is really really cool. Its not kid friendly but is a great place to make kids.

Jodi, I like your Dena Day calendar reminder to make a donation idea (a few posts down). Mine is set for July 3rd.

Happy new year!

Hello All,

I had a great weekend drive to San Antinio, TX to pick up his brother who flew in form MI. We had ALL day to explore and with gas prices the way they are we haven't been out exploring as much as we use to. Anyway to my point we stumbled accross a beautiful TX State Park at Inks Lake that has naturaul granite surrounding it and made the water look crystal clear and dark blue. The walking trails were really nice and true trails even for the not so advid hiker. And all of this was smack dab in the middle of a whole bunch of towns...it amazed me as we sat there eating our picnic lunch that we are all so busy sometimes we forget to look around us.

My husband and I live on a small ranch in the middle of no where Texas but it has it's own beauty. It's not the Pacific Ocean of my youths or the majestic Sierra Nevada Mtns but it is beautiful slow rolling hills in the central plains of TX and if I took the time I would remember why we bought our home here was because of the beauty and the instant get-away feeling we felt when we got home each night from town.

We wandered the trails here at the state park which had 3 parks really almost on top of each other with the Longhorn Caverns to explore underneath and vista trails to conqueor and we were so wanting to stay more than the 45 min. we had before getting back on the road.

We will definitely be back! Besides it looks like a great sailing lake and I have yet to show my husband how to sail and they have kayak and sailboat rentals available there. I guess I wanted to share my little bit of happiness I discovered in HUGE TX I know there is still more to explore and I know Dena would love the adventure, adrenaline and beauty too!

Hope you all had a great weekend too! Now I need to go feed the goats, llamas, horses, dogs and cats...oh yeah and maybe I should make dinner for my husband too! Just to round out a great outdoor weekend that I've been needing for a while. I may not be smelling roses but I am smelling nature;-)

What more needs to be said people?

Why can't EVERYONE with opinions good, bad or indifferent keep them to themselves? Haven't we all heard enough? Obviously the debating will continue until people stop calling others wise, unwise, appropriate, inappropriate, right, wrong, concerned, not-concerned.

To the people have positive opinions-you are entitled and have every right to voice them. To the people with negative opinions-you are entitled and have every right to voice them. However, pointing fingers and trying to prove your point on this website is not constructive or productive and clearly not effective at this point. Let's just put this to rest and move on.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Koo Cho. Your wise and compassionate words are worth reading very carefully. I hope everyone does this and considers thoughtfully before posting. The right to HAVE an opinion should NEVER be confused with the appropriateness of sharing it indiscriminately.

God bless you, Bob and Eva. You are wonderful, loving parents and grandparents.

Koo Cho, best wishes, thoughts, and prayers to you on your journey as well.

Dear Dena and family, I came to your site after reading about her China trip in the papers. My husband Chris suffered a severe brain injury just 1 week before Dena’s accident in April 2005 and has since been severely disabled physically and cognitively. I took him to China as well last year – and given the improvements he has made, we are returning again in two months for more stem cell therapy.

My husband Chris and I have a little boy who was less than 2 y.o. at the time of my husband’s cardiac arrest who was only 32 y.o. at the time. Life in the last 3 years has been very hard for all of us as I am sure you can relate to. I truly genuinely think no one can phantom what really is to have a loved family member with such a devastating brain injury, what caring for someone in this state entails, the absolutely emotional rollercoaster of all people involved, the physical exhaustion, and the extent of financial devastation that fall upon the guardians fighting for recovery of a brain injury like Dena’s and Chris’.

I have made many decisions in the last three years in many different fronts regarding Chris (health and care, personal, financial, practical, etc) as it was required to be made. Sometimes, people will not agree with your decisions as it happened made times with certain decisions I made regarding my husband and my life. All I can say is that people are so entitled to have their differing opinions but if I can just note 2 things: 1. if one does not have something supportive to say, it is better not to say it at all because it could be very hurtful for the people involved (Bob and Eva). They already live in so much pain and deal with so much and off course people feel differently and disagree, and it is so OK to disagree and feel differently, but expressing it so publicly may be very hurtful to the people (Bob and Eva) who only need support and encouragement to continue on this very difficult journey of caring for Dena. It is also unnecessary because it brings nothing – what good came out of the negative comment? None. Therefore, not necessary, keep it to yourself. 2. I know it is easy to project and think “I would do this or that”. Actually people can not. Only the people involved are equipped with 100% of the information to make whatever decisions they deem appropriate – and whatever they decide, it is what they deemed to be in Dena’s best interest. Period.

I do not know any of you but I just wanted to reach out to Bob, Eva, and say that you are doing such a fantastic job. I check your site often as I do with many other brain injury sites. Many strangers have reached out to me in the last three years and it did mean so much to me. I wish I could do some of the therapies you provide Dena (i.e. horse riding) but Chris’ condition is much more severe. He is in a specialized nursing home.

My name is Koo Cho. I live in London, UK. My email is koo_cho@hotmail.com and my husband website is http://chrisbarnes.blogharbor.com/ in case you want to see or follow his progress.

You are all in my thoughts and I wish you continued progress and healing in the new year.

Happy 2008!

If another visitor 'happens' across this site and feels the need to share, maybe next time they won't ignore the most important entry of all, from Dena's father who could not have made his wishes any more clear:

HAPPY NEW YEAR. Well the hectic Christmas season is over and the never ending football games begin. Next week the routine for Dena starts with speech therapy and horse back riding. We will see a new doctor a GP who is local and hopefully get rid of her congestion. Dena uses her NU-Step daily and I think her right leg is getting stronger, but it really is too early to tell.
Another negative comment regarding Dena's business. We have enough negatisim in our lives without our "friend" bashing Glenn. Please read his detailed explanation of the business on 12/20/07. Dear friend call me at 561-254-6670 if you have any further comments or questions. If you live in the area, be positive and stop by for a visit Dena loves company. By the way Dena earned $118.00 in two weeks. Thank you for supporting her. I have several projects in the works, but too new to go into any detail. Of course I will keep you informed.
Love, Dena, Eva, Bob

I am so disappointed by the bickering occuring on this page about this new venture of Dena's. We all need to remember what the true spirit of this website is about and also consider how upsetting this surely must be to Bob and Eva, who struggle everyday to bring happiness and quality to Dena's life. They are the ones in the trenches and if they have decided they want to try this, then so be it. Who are we to tell them otherwise?? One of the real dangers of this computer age we live in, is our ability to share our opinions. Well guess what-it isn't always important to let people know what you think and not everyone cares like you do. Sad commentary I know, but true. So I say, let's agree to disagree but keep it off this site. And if you don't agree with this venture or product, just don't buy the stuff. End of story.
My heart goes out to Dena, Bob, Eva and Caden. Keep fighting the good fight and don't let this get in your way.

Glen, I happened upon this website looking for something else..and decided to read thru what appeared to be an uplifting story about a wonderful woman that endured a great deal of tragedy and suffering. And, in reading the uplifting and supportive posts over the course of a yr or so, I find this 'creep' suddendly surface to announce himself as a 'friend' that deelpy cared and wanted to help. And, in such eloquent fashion, attempts to persuade Dena's caring friends into believing that if they just bought your product (brazillian wonder potion..mmmmmm hmmmm) that Dena would recieve $8. That leaves, approx 6 times that left for a bucket we can call 'other'. I tend to agree with the 'Friends' that spoke up and challenged you on the ethics of this. Personally, as an innocent observer, Dena deserves the original intent of this web site which was based on loving friends and family as supporters, not a free, public advertising space. I have past experience with MLM...dude, you ain't foolin nobody...

A friend told me that there is a fine line between discernment and judgement. It's great to read and see that we all care. Let's not only put the "caring" back; let's put the "bridge" back. Bridges connect places that are alike. Bridges also connect terrians that differ greatly.

Shifting gears…

Not sure if any of you have been watching the weather lately. I woke up to 3’ of snow on my driveway this am. Good for the resorts and for riding (I’ve hit some great powder days), but not so good for the toboggan run street I live on. Every time the plow hits my street, it leaves a 1” sheet of solid ice and there’s about an 10% grade for 200 yards… cars pile up at the bottom in a snow bank every morning – crazy!

Bob, Eva, I hope you guys are faring well. From FL sun to UT powder (and many feet of it) is probably a tough adjustment! I hope you have a good supply of gas for the blower! I ran my blower out twice just trying to plow a path to my car!

I hear you have a new GP doctor for Dena, THAT’S AWESOME. You mentioned Dena had “congestion” – Did she have a cold? Please keep us posted. Bob, Eva – still very much want to arrange a coffee day at my house one morning a week (lets wait for the toboggan run to thaw though!).

I look forward to hearing about your ‘plans in the works’ and to your next updates. THANKS!

Another Friend,
You asking if others agree with you is only perpetuating the problem of negativity. As the person prior to you suggested, just DROP it. As it was pointed out numerous times, by numerous people, we all have different ideas for support, just because many disagree with MLM doesn't mean they are wrong or negative,it just means they have another opinion.
Let's turn this site back into "Caring" bridge for Dena and leave the debating for someplace else.

5 more upsetting sentences after a self-appointed ref says ‘enough’.Glen is not perpetuating this.Concerns were addressed, his responses were courteous. This is very upsetting. The family has asks us to stay positive.
Aren’t you all friends?I don’t understand how this has escalated or why glen takes the brunt.Bob and Eva write that they made a decision they are okay with. Are some in the group better qualified to decide for Bob and Eva what’s best?
We have no business in this aspect of their life.Voicing concern is different than openly casting judgment on any family member or friend, or on any decision Dena’s family makes. If these posts are not negative, at the very least they are not positive.
Dena Day is a great idea.So is the idea that we can buy or not buy from Dena’s business. We can donate or not donate if we choose, we can fundraise. Each of us will do what we are comfortable with. The focus of this site and our posts badly needs to be shifted back to Dena and her family and how they are doing through all this.Hopefully there are others in this group who agree?

Enough
This is all getting so ridiculous and Glen you seem to be the only one who is continually calling peoples questions and concerns "negative".
Why don't you be the first to let it go and let peoples opinions be just what they are, opinions. We are all entitled to one.
Just because others don't agree with you doesn't make them wrong, nor right. Just different.
I believe whole heartedly no one has purposely been negative and certainly everybody on Dena's sight only wants the best for her.To intimate others are "dressing up concern" by using words like Love and God is insulting. Please take your own advice and stop debating and promoting your personal opinions on "Dena's" sight and hopefully others will take your lead.

We are all adult enough to quietly and calmly come to our own conclusions – lets. I saw a financial need, I suggested (one) option to add in with the others; we poled 600 people, 200+ responded in favor. The Brehms decided it couldn’t hurt. It was a unique and refreshing concept, and even in the midst of controversy, it has been successful for Dena.

It’s this vibe lately among friends that really hurts, more so for Bob and Eva and Dena. We can dress it up as concern, we can end our posts with words of Love and Blessings from God, but no matter how we serve it up, it’s negativity, and Bob specifically asked us not to bring here; it emanates off the screen and into our lives. Is this fair to Bob, Eva, Dena, Caden...?

Take the focus off me and take the focus of you; remember this is Dena’s site. This is Dena’s place for positive, encouraging words between and for her many friends, it's not the place for debate, or personal opinions, or hostility.

Can we just agree to just put the focus back on the positive in life, and move away from the negative? It's a new year, lets circle back around DENA - it seems like a very good idea. Allow me to be the first to start with a fresh new post (to follow).

Glenn Cogan
Park City, UT - Tuesday, January 8, 2008 7:37 PM CST
Glenn,

Yesterday you promised not to respond to any negativity (as you perceive it) and today I receive yet another one of your self promoting emails in my personal email inbox. I provided my personal email address to Caring Bridge in support of Dena, I did not intend on making it available to anyone else for ANY other purpose. I don't even know you and would appreciate if I did not receive additional emails regarding your products.

I too find it troubling that people's very valid inquiries regarding you and your business have been misconstrued into lack of concern for Dena's care and recovery. Personally I view it as just the opposite. It is many of her friends who are intent on helping her benefit to fullest extent.

In response to the earlier post that suggests we spend our energy coming up with ideas for other ways to benefit Dena. Here is an idea we have come up with; send checks, gift cards, etc. directly to her. That way you can be sure Dena is getting the whole donation!

In love and support of Dena and the Brehm Family

Happy New Year. I regret it has been quite a long while since I have posted on this site. Thanks Bob for consistently keeping us updated with Dena's progress, even her smallest accomplishments are a victory. You all are constantly on my mind.

It is so distressing to read the latest posts and the hostilities that have arisen regarding Dena's new business. These kind of business's raise all kinds of concerns as Bob pointed out, without the questions regarding Dena's well being. I am deeply disappointed that the "friend" who posted their questions or concerns has been accused of not supporting Dena or her family. To suggest that anyone is not in support of the Brehm family is unacceptable. The ethics and morality of this endeavor is plainly the question, certainly not anyone's support for Dena or her family. We each need to struggle with that and determine our own conclusions. As a previous post stated if you want to support than do, if not than don't. I have drawn my own conclusions. Although I may not agree with others I will do what ever I can to offer support. I have been there through Judy Bloom, braces, dolphin shorts, roller-skates, first loves, party's, graduations, college, the lose of a great friend, marriage and the birth of our children. Challenge my support if you would like. Dena is truly my oldest and dearest friend and always will be.

There certainly is a need to help out and I will give credit to Glenn for putting that back in the forefront. I know very well the hard work that goes into fundraising. Since this is the beginning of a new year I have put on my calendar several days that I have designated DENA DAYS. Just a reminder for me to send a donation to her family. If supporting Dena's business is not something you want to do possibly you can join me in designating DENA DAYS. Whatever the choice lets not argue and just do what we can to help.
All of my love to Dena, Bob, Eva, Caden and Robby!!

Glenn,
I commend you for your heart and for your effort! Whether one believes this is a the best way to help Dena or not, it is a means to which support for Dena is achieved. It has also reignited some much needed enthusiasm and attention for Dena, which is also wonderful. I applaud you for taking an active part in Dena's recovery and focusing you energies positively versus negatively. The same energy spent discussing whether or not this is the best way to help Dena could be better spent coming up with additional idea's that can benefit her recovery. Let's remain focused on a solution, thank you Glenn.

This person knows an inquiry posted in a forum of close friends deserves an answer, and I've recently found myself pouring out detailed responses one after another in the hope this will subside. I realize now, regardless what I or anyone else writes, our friend will not be satisfied until someone jumps in his/her corner.

Bob has asked us to please refrain from this negativity, yet I'm caught in the middle in front of many people I have known a long time that I think are looking for me to answer. Not because they need to see what I will answer; I think most are hoping I will fire back; it's not going to happen, 'sorry'.

Bob and Eva, Dena and Caden spent an amazing Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve with us this year, I've known Dena and Robby since they were in 1st or 2nd grade, I've been in the Brehm's life over 3 DECADES, we literally lived a mile away most of my life (and now we do again later in life). I see them quite a lot these days here in Park City, as much as I can at least. I've made a personal promise to be more involved. I want to help more than I have.

I'm not standing on a soap box claiming I am a great friend, or that I have the perfect solution, I don't even expect you to get it friend, nor will I loose sleep over your lack of understanding. However, I do agree with the last few posts... I wonder what your agenda is, or what you hope to prove?

On a much more positive note, Dena's business earned another $30 last night for a grand total of $148 she now can use for her own needs - Very cool!

Thanks guys... I know it's rocky waters right now with this crap, but orders are coming in and Dena's business wheels are up and rolling. This is AWESOME!

"Friend", to use a forum that belongs to our dear friend and to a family that we love for the gratification of your own selfishness and your own personal insecurities is despicable. My need to post anonymously is fueled only by the notion, my words and the tone of my post are out of character. I am also genuinely concerned that I may know you by some stroke of my imagination. If only for that reason, I am forced into the shadows with you.

If I were a friend to Dena and I am, I would scale the highest mountain to scream at the top of my lungs where I stand in the matter, good bad or indifferent. I absolutely do support Bob and Eva and I will support Dena's business, but I suppose you will be sending your donations by check right "Friend".

You asked your questions, you got more than thorough answers, yet you persist against the family's wishes. What kind of a friend does this? Who are you? We can label ourselves anything when we are anonymous though can't we.

This person will continue speaking for us, is that what any of us want? Lets speak up people, lets speak up.

I'm having a hard time understanding how anyone can be upset with any opportunity to help out Dena and her family. If you don't want to support through Mona Vie, don't. Help out in the way that you feel most comfortable with. I am sure that Eva and Bob did a lot of research on the subject and were comfortable with what Glenn proposed or they wouldn't have agreed to give it a try. I don't remember anyone asking me to sign up to sell the Mona Vie, but just to buy a bottle or two to help out a friend. Where's the harm in that?

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope 2008 holds nothing but happiness and good health!

Glenn,
It's not the money from Dena's sales that is significant,I'm sure you don't receive even a fraction of the sales. But what you do get is a multi-levelers dream; access to a huge, captivating list, intent on one thing, Dena's care and well-being. The more we visit the sight, which is weekly or even daily, and the more we discuss it, the more opportunity you have to reach people. Access like this for an MLM business is a grand slam home run, worth much, much more than a piece of Dena's sales.Perhaps I'm wrong, I hope I am, but it was on Dena's "personal website" that we all just recently learned about you and your business. Please forgive me for sharing my thoughts here, but I love Dena and her family way too much to stay silent on this.
God Bless

Brehms, Happy New Year. can you believe this snow!!

Bob and Glenn, thank you for the postings, i hope those that have questions about Dena's new business take the time to find out more about it by calling in person to discuss it. This is a great opportunity for dena and for those that choose to purchase and help her with some cash. This project business was done out of love, so please help support it, or if you want to question it do so in a proper way;

on another note, i myself have been bad lately on weekly visits to see dena and eva, we are all busy this time of year !! but even if you have a half hour they love company and dena is always a willing listener to our daily adventures.

Love to you all, and see you this week before the film fest starts. Much love, lauren

Dena has actually made $116, and to reiterate, I make (zero) from Dena’s retail sales. I’m told Bob received Dena’s Visa card last week. Eva told me Dena’s recent earnings would probably be applied toward a new stroller purchase for Dena; not because Bob and Eva need the money, but because this is a huge milestone for Dena and they are truly thrilled that she can help with the purchase. I think you can sense that in Bob’s recent posting!

To set the record straight, these businesses tend to (only) pay commissions upstream when a distributor (Dena) enrolls other people into the business, and so on, and so on, and so on… As I’ve pointed out many times already, this is not how we are operating Dena’s business.

In Dena’s case, I proposed a simple and deliberate online retail business model – 1) We placed Dena off on her own, with no intention of enrolling people under her (ever). 2) Dena earns an income from this business (ONLY) when her friends purchase from her site. 3) No one is under any pressure to purchase or enroll. 4) No one above Dena stands in line to take profits from Dena (period). 5) People are paying for and managing Dena’s business for her.

I’m confident we’ve proposed a good thing for Dena with this business, and I’m confident Dena will earn more from the business in the coming months as we see good things happen from it for Dena and for her family.

Maybe a better question is this:

Do any of us really know who’s in line for our money when we purchase ANYTHING…

Here’s what I know -

– 40-45% of our money goes to pay to one of the top 4-5 NY, LA, or IL ad agencies
– 20% goes to the store we purchase from
– 15% goes to the distributor who brought the product to the store
– 5% goes to the trucking companies that got it to the distributor
– 5% goes to the Shipping Co that bring 80% of our goods in from over seas
– 10-15% goes to the BRAND we bought in the first place!

So long as Dena is assured that her profit will NEVER waiver, is it really worth us expending so much energy to hold this open debate on Dena’s personal website time and time again?

Donations are still graciously accepted, fundraisers will still be held, and gift cards are always an amazing way to help… Dena’s MonaVie business is just (one) more small avenue that we hope can help with her expenses.

I hope my answer was the answer you were looking for… If not, I tried.

How much have you made Glenn? $58 to Dena, how much to you? We know you are benefitting, please explain before we buy. Just curious.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

I want to extend a special thanks to all of you who I know and to all of those in the group who've been so supportive of Bob and Eva's decision to give this business a try for Dena. Your words are very comforting - Keep the good vibes coming!

I also want to personally thank those who've taken the time to post thoughts on MonaVie, or information they know (or have heard) about the product. It is clearly a beneficial product for our bodies, but as we've said many times before... even to just buy a bottle to 'try' helps Dena - It's worth it!

I think you'll all be stoked to know Dena's business has already earned her a profit thanks to a few purchases made by her friends! I've yet to hear if Bob recieved Dena's Debit Card, but I do know that Bob was pleasantly surprised when he recieved an email from MonaVie congratulating Dena on her recent earnings!

If we've proven nothing else, WE HAVE PROVEN DENA CAN HELP COVER SOME OF HER OWN EXPENSES! Maybe Dena's business covers the water and gas this month, then maybe the electric too next month... what if we could help with her mortgage!

Let pull together and help her double her last month's earning - SHE CAN DO THIS, she just needs a little help from her friends!

Thanks again everyone!

The image below is from Dena's business site. The graph depicts the two (2) weeks when she recieved a profit - Pretty damn cool.

Hello Bean, Bob and Eva-
Happy New year. I have a good feeling about 2008. Think about you guys daily. Bean looks great on her new bike. Loved the Christmas picture with Caden.
Congratulations on the new business. Looking forward to making my first purchase. I've told all my "Whole Foods" freinds about it so hopefully some orders will be coming your way.
Lots of love and support to you! Miss you.
Hugs-
E
