Dear Sharon ~ it was nice meeting you with Pat and Linda at the walk yesterday. As you shared your feelings about this year being harder than even previous years, the following story came to mind. I pray for you this Mother's Day. Love, Sylvia

TEARS ARE THE PROOF OF LIFE

"How long will the pain last?" a broken hearted mourner asked me.

"All the rest of your life," I answered truthfully.

No matter how many years pass, we remember. The loss of a loved one is like a major operation; part of us is removed, and we have a scar for the rest of our lives.

This doesn't mean that the pain continues at the same intensity. There is a short while, at first, when we hardly believe it. It is rather like when we have cut our hand, we see the blood flowing, but the pain has not yet set in. So when we are bereaved, there is a short while before the pain hits us. But when it does, it is massive in its effect. Grief is shattering.

Then the wound is healed, so to speak. The stitches are taken out....The scar is still there, and the scar tissue too. As the years go by, we manage, but the pain is still there, not far below the surface. We see a face that looks familiar, hear a voice that has echoes, see a photograph in someone's album, and it is as though the knife were in the wound again.

But not so painfully. And mixed with joy, too. Because remembering a happy time is not all sorrow; it brings back happiness with it.

"How long will the pain last?"

All the rest of your life.

But the thing to remember is that not only the pain will last, but the memories as well. Tears are the proof of life. The more love, the more tears. If this be true, than how could we ever ask that the pain cease altogether? For then the memory of love would go with it. The pain of grief is the price we pay for love.

Sharon, I don't know what made me look at your old journal entries tonight but I came across the essay your son wrote when he was in 11th grade. It was so moving and beautiful it was hard to believe someone so young could have written it. Unfortunately, though, he had lived more than most juniors in high school. How wonderful that it made him more sensitive and appreciative rather than bitter and angry. I've been reading your site for a long time and I remember how shocked I was that night when I read that Michael was gone. His smile was contagious and I wish I had known him. God bless your family.

Hi,

I too lost my Yankee fan, my best friend, my son. And I am so sorry for your loss. I wanted to make you aware (maybe again) about the Cure Childhood Cancer petition! The GREAT news is that CureSearch, LIVESTRONG and Alex’s Lemonade Stands have ALL written about the Petition on their websites! And TX Children’s and DUKE have both allowed us to setup paper versions inside the hospitals! WE ARE MAKING HEADWAY and are at over 11,000 signatures! But we need your help again. If you can please make your readers aware, email it around again, and give just a little publicity, I think we can make this happen!

Thanks again,
AJs Dad

Not a day goes by that I don't think of Michael, especially around Columbus Day. It was such an honor to have in my car and drive him in the parade. I always had so much fun. Everytime Lucas and I walk at the park, I make it a point to stop at Michael's tree and show it to him. I tell him what a special boy Michael was and how lucky I was to have known him. I can only hope that Lucas will be as sweet and loving as all of your boys. Know that my thoughts, prayers, and love are with you every day.

I TOO FEEL MICHAEL'S PRESENTS AT MIDTOWN. I WAS HONORED TO TAKE ANTHONY TO SCHOOL ON THAT 2ND DAY.. I KNEW IT WAS HARD FOR ANTHONY ENTERING THAT BIG SCHOOYARD KNOWING THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FIRST YEAR TOGETHER IN THE BIG SCHOOLYARD. NOW THAT ANTHONY IS A FOURTH GRADER THIS ALLOWED HIM TO ENTER THAT BIG SCHOOLYARD. HE SAID TO ME " I WOULD HAVE BEEN WITH MICHAEL THIS YEAR" I TOLD HIM " HE IS WITH YOU ". I WAS CERTAIN ABOUT THIS ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TOLD ME ABOUT THE SCIENCE BOOK. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR BEAUTIFUL FAMILY. THANKS FOR SHARING THEM WITH ME. LOVE RONNIE PIKE

Romano family,
I worked at Sloan Kettering and knew you guys very well!! I sometimes sit and think about all the courageous children there and their GREAT families! Today I came upon the news of Michael's passing! I can say that it deeply saddened me and to Michael's mom i wanted to say, my the Lord give you the strength to continue on..if I am not mistaken I htink Michael has a little brother, be strong! And remember its ok to be sad!! Tomorrow is my Mom's 3 years that she lost the battle to this disease. I will say a prayer tonight for you and your family in hopes that you may find comfort in knowing that Michael is finally resting and not in pain!!! MAY GOD BLESS U ALWAYS!!!! Michael rest in peace!!

Hi Sharon, still thinking of you all and remembering Michael. He was just the nicest child! I still remember him letting me rub his little bald head! :) I loved how soft his was!! Much love and hope you are all doing well. How big is Mr. Anthony now? Remember how he and Payton used to lay in bed together during 3F8's? Payton turns 7 next month! I can hardly believe it. Please send me pictures of the boys if you can, I'd love to see how big Anthony has gotten!

hello mrs. ramano. You may not remember me but I'm Mariela. I was Michael's "care bear" thoughout grammer school. I've been trying to find a way to get in touch with you for quite a while now. I moved to south carolina 2 years ago and have lost touch with many people in jersey. Anyway the relay is coming up soon and i could never forget about michael. Thoughout our entire time as "care bears" i know he taught me more then i taught him. He had this smile that just made everyone else smile. Micheal is how i got started doing the relay, and I've learned so much about life and what truely being happy means because of it. at his young age he made an inpact on my life that changed who i was and how i saw things in life forever. anyhow, i just wanted to say sorry that i wasn't able to get in touch with you sooner, and thank you, michael was an amazing person.
