HI EVERYONE
Always good to hear that Max is doing well.Your summer sounds busy...but good busy.
I am hoping , one day Ava will be as active as Max is now. Ashley had her to the dr. yesterday. It seems her Aorta is narrowing again, which could mean more heart surgery. Ashley has another appointment in September. iT SEEMS THESE "WONDERFUL " CHILDREN are keeping us all on our toes. And really on our knees!
It's encouraging to see how Max has been doing these past few years.
Keep up the good work.!!!!!!
We love you all

Paul and I went to Max's Parent teacher conference last week. His teachers are very impressed with his development. They feel he is doing great. He is definately ready for Kindergarden next year. Paul and I were also very impressed. We know he is an amazing child, but I just can not find the words to express my pride in him. They showed a self portrait that he drew in the beginning of the year and one he drew recently, what an amazing difference. I can say I floated out of the conference I was so happy for Max and could not have been any happier. It is always so thrilling to hear someone talk about how well your child is doing. I don't mean to brag but I am THRILLED and so very, very proud of him. Amanda and Max are both taking swimming lessons and doing very well. Amanda is learning the proper strokes so if she wants to join the swim team later she can. Maxwell is learning to swim. I had to go in the pool with him for the first two lessons. This week he went in all by himself with his teacher. I can't wait, he will be willing to go in a pool this summer and not just sit on the steps. I am signing Amanda up for Softball this week and I am trying to sign Max up for T-Ball. I think it will be good for him to try since he likes hitting the ball so much. Wish us luck. Hopefully it will go better than Soccer. Try everything once and if it does not work out then we will try something different next time. I have gone on enough, I hope everyone is doing well. I am only on the computer at work and do not get to post or check into other sites often but I appreciate everyone's support and do think of you often. Thanks again.

He did have his friend spend the night a couple weeks ago for the first time and they were up till about 2am (and crazy me, I had a 3 hour job interview the next morning at 7am!) they had fun though.

hey guys!!! yeah i have been avoiding the dreaded line, "how bout those eagles?" oh well, we'll get em next year! me and Austin went to the mall and he wanted to make wishes in the wishing thing so he said he wished that the eagles won, i told him my wish was that we didnt embarress ourselves! (maybe i should have wished for a win!!!) well, we had a taste of it and they'll want that taste again next year! Lets just hope it doesnt take 4 superbowls for a win !! lol
great news with the underwear at night!! Austin went almost a full year without wearing the pull ups and then started wearing them again last year and we just stopped again last week, I ran out of pull ups and I told him I was not buying them anymore! He has only had 2 accidents in almost 2 weeks and he was sick last weekend so I couldnt blame him, he was knocked out on cough meds!
Well, we definetly have to get together again, we had lots of fun together! Maybe we could do a phillies game?!!!
I still havent seen the new park yet!

Yea MAX!!! We are so excited for you guys! I'm so happy you are doing home treatments. It will make your life so much easier. We call home treatment day "Movie Day" at our house and my kids each get to pick a movie and we have pizza for lunch. So make sure your Dad does something special for your treatment days too! (evil grin LOL). If you have any questions call me. I glad I fought so hard to get home treatments because now cute little boys (and girls) can get their treatment at home now too. I'm doing the happy dance! I'm not sure how far disney world is from your house but we will be in FL in March 2005 and although we will be very busy granting Sammie's Make a Wish maybe we could get together for dinner or something??? Keep it in mind?

Happy Home Treatment Day!!!!!

Hi Max! It seem as though you are just 3 days older than Elliot (April 19, 2000) who also has Hurlers (Transplanted 12/26/2001). We also live just up the street in New Hampshire, you know 5 or 6 hours up the street. I love your pictures, it looks as though you are just as busy as Elliot. We will be checking on you often! Hi Maxie, Aunt Tine signing in to tell you how proud I am of you!!! You show so much courage & strength in any 4 year old I know!!! For you who sign in every now and then and read up on the updates, I just want you to know what a wonderful person Maxwell is!!! He is sweet, gernerous, very outgoing, and very smart!! Even though Maxwell has MPS, I sometimes forget because he to me is such an extordinary child. I have a 4 year old my self named Tristan. Max sometimes could not keep up with Tristan and I did not know how to explain it to him as to why. He would say "Why does Max get so tired so quickley?" "Why does Max call me Twistan and not Tristan?" How do I explain this to a 4 year old? I explained to Tristan what MPS was and at first he just kept thinking Maxie had a cold and he will be getting better soon. As time passed, I think he was starting to realize that Tylenol cold was not working. He is now very over protected of Maxie. I find it sweet but not nessesary. Maxie is more than able to take care of himself. He is THE MAX!!! And I myself am proud and extremeley lucky to have a nephew as wonderful as Maxie. I love it that he is always in good spirit every Thursday after treatment. There has never been a time when I have seen Maxie without a smile.
Maxie, Unlce Jimmy, Tristan and I love you just the way you are!!!!! Never forget that!!!!

Hello everyone! So far we have not had to use the oxygen except for one night. Max was sick this week and as soon as the nasal congestion starts his oxygen level in is blood drops. We were supposed to go for our final sleep study thursday night but I cancelled it. No sense going when we know it will not be accurate. I want a true baseline study done when he is not sick. The results of the first two were already too varied. The sleep study is rescheduled for August. First available appointment, can you believe it? Oh well!! Everything else is going well. Max and Amanda are both doing great. I feel like I have to be the luckiest mom in the world to have two such incredible kids. I hope everyone had a great mothers day! I know I did! As always thanks for checking in on us. Your thoughts and words of kindness are greatly appreciated.

I love the new picture on the home page! Thanks Kim! I have been giving Alli the Zyrtec at bedtime, and it seems to be working for her except that we all have some sort of sinus stuff going on at our house! So I have not really been able to tell. She is still stuffy~ I think we may need a round of antibiotics to clear this up and then see if the Zyrtec works! I would LOVE to see a clear nose again! I hope this workd as weel with ALli as it seems to be working with Max!

Anybody else with a central port and frequent fevers? We need your advise. Max had his port placed in September and we had our 3rd blood culture done this past week. Max had a 102.8 fever on Wednesday. We went to the local pediatrician, they could not find much besides swollen glands and his throat was red. We went to the local ER for blood cultures. We found out that night his White Blood Count was elevated, but not to worry. The doctor wanted to see us back in the office the next day. Max was much better even the doctor agreed. She ordered some further studies on the blood work and according to these results she wanted us to go to DuPont. So off we went, against Max's wishes, he said he did not want to go to the doctor's any more. Everything was ok. No treatment required in the ER, they just evaluated him. The next day we found out that his blood cultures were negative. After all this Paul and I are thinking there has to be a better way. Any advise? To follow up on the latest sleep study. The second study was worse than the first. Now we have to see ENT and if they do not find a reason for obstruction we get to.........have another SLEEP STUDY.....Yeah!! This one will be a neuorlogical sleep study with Bi-Pap and oxygen on standby and they will try both during study if required. Paul said it's my turn he stayed for both the sleep studies so far, thanks Paul!. We also have another Orthopedic appointment coming up soon. Wish Paul luck he is having a sleep over for Amanda's birthday tonight with about 10 girls who are not planning on sleeping. Have fun!!

Hey Guys,

Sorry about the oxygen. Prepare for lots of fun :( When my kids were little it was a pain to get the oxygen on and to keep it on. Now it's just a normal part of getting ready for bed! I hope Max doesn't fight it too much! He will feel much better on it!

Please know you are in my prayers even if I don't sign as often as I should!

HI Everyone,
We are still thinking about all of you often.
Sound like Max is a strong one.
Thankfully his spirit is sweet.
He is going to surprise all of us , by his courage and determination.
Believe me(I know) when a child has special needs,it's important for them to know how wonderful they are.
IT seems you are doing a great job of that.
You let Max know he is special because he is Max, not special because of his needs.
This little boy is smiling and happy, what a great testmoney to the people who surround him and the way you treat him.
You are in our prayers
love to all

hey guys,
I was starting to get a little worried since there was a lack of updating on your part!! ha ha ha!!! I guess your eagles depression is over though!!!
I know the feeling about how you felt that his breathing seemed better at the hosp during the sleep study! It always works out that way!! Then they all think we are crazy parents!!!! Austin had his at home and after finally getting him hooked up, he slept for like 5 hours, I went in to check him and I (the idiot) forgot to hit the print button on the monitor so NOTHING was recorded!!! Then he kept waking up after that! It was horrible!!!!
I hope everything comes out great! Wasnt the snow fun?? Austin was mad at me cause we havent been out to play in it but he will get over it! I wasnt feeling well!
Well, tomorrow night I am off to the Philly Soul pep rally (and a bon jovi concert!) woo hoooooo!!!!
maybe they can get us a win!!!! talk to ya soon! sorry for such a long guestbook entry!!!

Hi Everyone.
Glad Max is home. Zach tonsiles grew back along with the adnoids a few years ago. We had them taken out.Again then 3 years ago his adnoids came back so out they came. So far they have not come back. Zach had ben on ERT about a year when the nasial dranage and congestion stoped. Except for a cold. As for blowing his nose, he just started doing that about a year ago. What I did was hold his lips closed and told him to blow he finaly figured it out. Hope this helps.
Take care Shaun and Zach.

EXCITING NEWS!!! Maxwell is now cast free!! Yeah!! Everything went well today, his radius is healing well and the last cast is off. We have to be careful for the next four weeks, the bone is still fragile. We came home and got right into the tub!! It is so nice to not have to worry about getting a cast wet!! Max was thrilled to lay down put his face in the water and splash. We were both wet in the end!! On another note everything went great with his infusion yesterday. He is incredible with them accessing and de-accessing his port. No crying at all. An occasional ouch!! I had a long talk with Dr. Arch and we are going to see GI for follow-up of the enlarged liver. She feels he is doing great, but wants to make sure everything is okey. Also, before we get involved in sports we want to make sure there are no medical concerns. We also did a urinalysis, Paul has been concerned with excessive thirst. We are looking for spillover of sugar, don't expect anything to come up there either. Oh well it's okey to be safe, as far as I am concerned there is no such thing as being over cautious. We hope everyone had a great holiday. I want to send a special thank you to Paul for being such a wonderful dad.

I found your site from another caringbridge child. My daugher was diagnosed with Krabbe Disease in June. She is now 129 days post transplant. I read through your journel history to discover that we have alot in common. Ashleigh was diagnosed at DuPont and Dr. Arch was incredible with getting Ashleigh treatment. I believe she saved Ashleigh's life. Best wishes for a healthy and happy new year to you and your family. With hope and prayer, Michelle Gwin

Hey there Max! YOU ARE TOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!! I just love your new picture! You get cuter and cuter every time I see a new pic!!! That is awesome that his surgery went so well, and with the pain issue, I sometimes think its a hurler issue, Austin has such a high pain tolerence, much higher than I could ever stand! Even still, they say that after his transplant there isnt really any or much joint pain or anything but with all the other stuff likehis constant major ear infection to the point that the ear drum is about to burst! (yes that is another story, we are now on our 5 & 6th infection since sept 15th! and are heading back to the ent next week and hopefully will be getting our 4th set of tubes soon) he never complains, so when he does tell me something hurts I know it must be bad!
Oh and by the way, tell Max that Austin is also a Mcnabb every sunday!! He walks around wearing it and tries to spell E A G L E S but then to be funny he says Phillies instead of eagles! he keeps doing it cause everyone laughs at him! I am still hoping to get together someday ! I just think the boys would have lots of fun and we could talk about stuff! I am very interested in the ERT as well!
Well, I guess I have babbled on long enough! Talk to you soon! Give Max a hug and I love the cast!
Happy Thanksgiving if I dont sign again by then! We all have lots to be thankful for now!!!

Bismarck, ND Usa - Thursday, November 13, 2003 12:24 AM CST

I had originally planned to visit as many caringbridge sites as possible, and leave some encouraging words, prior to my daughters passing. Unfortunately her passing came sooner than we had expected, but longer than any of her doctors expected.

Another angel takes flight.

My daughter Pam had a brain tumor and was fighting the fight since November 4th, 2002, after the birth of her daughter (Casey Morgan). My youngest daughter, Karen, set up a caringbridge website for Pam. Karen's friends mother shared a prayer with us, that I would like to share with you and Max. It's called DON'T QUIT:
Don't Quit -
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit - Rest if you must, but do not quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about, When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow - You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than it seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up when he might have captured the victor's cup. And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out - The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar, So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, It's when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.(Just call on Jesus).

I would also like to share a saying that was on the card my wife Diane picked out, and we bought for Pam:

If you were a star
That wasn’t expected back
In the universe
For a thousand years,
I’d wait.

If you were the sky
And everyone went inside
When you got sad
And started to rain,
I’d stay.

And if you were a peach
And the world decided to get rid of all peaches,
I’d pick you up,
Put you in my pocket…

AND KEEP YOU…. FOREVER..

Prayers have scientifically been proven to work.

REMEMBER NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT. You are in our prayers. GOD bless you all.

Hi everyone!
I was glad to read that everything is going good with Max's treatments!!!! About the insurance thing.... first of all, I hate them! They have denied 99% of what Austin had done and after fighting and getting it approved they still arent paying for it, they find little reasons all the time that it wont be paid for, anything to save themselves a dollar right?! Anyway, what I did to get Austin's transplant approved, besides calling every news station and 60 mins, dateline, rosie o'donnell, (anyone who would listen or pretend to) I went straight to a local state senator, called the number from the phone book and after telling them my story I had the 2 heads of the insurance company on the phone, along with the evil woman who called me to deny it in the first place apologizing to me and they approved it! Within about 4 hours!!!!!! Politicians can be helfpul at times and I tell you that man will have my vote for life!!! Just an idea! Might be helpful! Or ask his therapists for some ideas, they would know what to do in your area for help! Well, sorry to ramble on, hope he had a great Halloween last night! I am still hiding Austins candy so he doesnt eat it all tonight!!!! Hope to hear from you soon! Good luck at your next infusion and I hope to hear good news on the hearing aids soon!

Hi,

My name is Page and I'm a Special Education student (emphasis in hearing impairements) who had to do a project on Hurler/Hunter syndrome (MPS). I want you to know I check in here often and think of Max. I have three boys of my own who Max reminds me of and when I read your story it touched me.

About the hearing aids. I have worked in Deaf Education for a while now and there is one thing I know of for sure: Where there is involved parents, there are ways to find things! You might want to try your local school district and find out what kind of program they offer for children with hearing impairements. I know that here in Utah, they have 'loaner' hearing aids for parents to use on their children. Because hearing aids come in all different styles and various benefits to each kind, it is best for you to 'test drive' hearing aids out before you buy (especially if they're 5k, that's not an easy thing to come by).

I don't know if you are already involved with Early Intervention yet, but Max would probably qualify for services because of his speech delays and hearing impairement. The best way to look for that number is through your local school district. They are required to provide services, as long as he qualifies. And I remember reading that you had him evaluated too, but sometimes service isn't rendered unless it's asked for (always a budget crisis in Early Intervention and schools).

Another thing is to fight the insurance company. I don't know what basis most people use, but most of the time they just require persistance. If you do raise a fuss and write a letter, explaining that it will help his speech problem, etc.. you may get the hearing aids paid for. It won't hurt to try, right?

Good luck to you and know that I'm checking in on little Max often! I hope that he can get the much needed hearing aids!!!!

Hello: It's been awhile since I have been on the site and was glad that I clicked onto your website. We also have a child with MPSI that was diagnosed 2 years ago at the age of 4. We also questioned his hands/fingers as well as joint stiffness and came to the diagnosis. We are currently into our 10 infusion and things are going well. Our son, Bryce, does not like the needles, etc. so we are now in the process of discussing a port/central line or a broviac. Did you have an option to choose or did your doctors recommend a port/central line. It's a difficult decision for us - we're not sure what is the better way to go. Any advice?
I enjoy reading your updates and am glad things are going well for your family.
My prayers are with you.

Glad to hear that Max is doing well with the infusions. Best of luck with the appointment regarding his hands. My son has MPS II, we never used the hand splints, but did do a bi-lateral tendon release at 7 years of age. I am so glad we did that surgery, it really helped him a lot. I hope there are no more problems with the tubing during infusions.

Hey guys,

Just a quick note to say hi! I'm sorry Max may have to have surgery on his hands. You might want to talk to Steve or Amy Holland about this. I think at least 2 of the 3 had surgery on their hands. They may be helpful with this. Jacob just broke down the cartlage (sp?) in his hands. His hands would lock all the time, he would call it his special trick and "pop them" back into place. It was yucky and I would always yell at him. But I think it worked for him. He still has to be careful, now if they "lock" it can take a 15 minutes to "unlock" them. Sami due to her keloids, I'm putting off her surgery. She will lose more than she will gain.

I hope treatments are going well. Max will love his hearing aids once he gets use to them. It's a great thing to hear! And your hearing will recover too because he will not have the TV up so loud! LOL

Love and Hugs,

Tami Slawson

Glad to hear infusion went well. I'm sure he'll catch up soon on speech. Most hurler kids have to go 2 times a week to speech and need hearing aids. So, we'll just pray that he speech starts coming quickly after therapy begins. I also heard that these infusions could help the hearing!

Dear Max,Kim and Paul,
I really enjoyed reading your web page. It had lots of good information that answered things that I was wondering about. My son Andrew is 3 and 1/2 he was diagnosed with MPS1 2 years ago and will be 2 years post-transplant in Aug. He is doing very well and we are eagerly following the new families we are meeting that are doing ERT. It sounds great. I am so glad for Max. Please feel free to come visit our web page. Anne

To all in the Family, My daughter Jennifer sent your website out today. Please know that you are not alone. For such a rare disease, there are a lot of prayers that will float your way. There is power in the strength of circles of friends. As we cirlce around Alli and try to give her our strength, I want to extend that strength to Max as well. I really believe that our day will come when we all meet and share our loved ones with a lot of hugs for everyone. I can't tell you how well Alli is doing with her treatments. The scary part is always the beginning (for both Alli and Jenn) but with age, that will get better.
Thank you for sharing your story and hang tight...there are a lot of people behind you! I will check in to your site for all the updates.

Hi Max and Famiy, I followed you from the Slawson's guestbook. I am sorry you have been diagnosed with this terrible disorder, but I am happy to hear you are now getting treatment. It's wonderful news that Aldurzyme has finally been approved. I wish you the best of luck with all your future treatments.
