August 30, 2020

On your mark, get set, go!

• This morning, my DH (dear husband) pressed “send” on “Gun Lap”—the book he has been writing for men who are approaching or in the retirement season—more than two weeks before the deadline! The discipline and perseverance this precious man has demonstrated—especially while struggling with anemia and amid endless doctor appointments, tests, scans, and transfusions—have been nothing short of heroic. However many or few laps he may have left, he is running this race well, fixing his eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2). Way to go, my beloved!

This week Robert will begin chemo that is scheduled to take place through the end of the year. For those who would like to pray with more details, here’s what is on the calendar (all times are ET):

• Monday (8/31) — 10:30–1:30 — a port will be “implanted” (hoping medical professionals will  pardon my imperfect wording on some of these things ... this is all new to me :). This will enable him to get blood drawn and have blood transfusions and chemo infusions without more “sticks”—Robert is looking forward to this provision!

• Wednesday (9/2) — 11:15 appt with Dr Douce (hematologist); 11:30 blood transfusion (assuming it’s needed). Wed PM, Robert’s daughter, Missy, arrives to help out for a few days. (So grateful for those who have been praying for Missy and Julie. This is not easy for them. They really love their dad.)

• Thursday (9/3) — 8:30–2:30 (approx) — first of six chemo treatments, every 21 days. Please pray that Robert will be able to tolerate the drugs, be free from allergic reactions, and sense the presence of Christ with him, as family/guests are not allowed to be with him (COVID policy).

• Friday (9/4) — post-chemo injection

Pray that the chemo will do what it is intended to do—nothing more, nothing less. Pray for physical, emotional, and spiritual strength over these next days.

Finally, about the pictures (sorry, not the best lighting): As we head into the first week of chemo, we have turned our sunroom into a “gratitude room.” Each day we are posting reminders of mercies and kindnesses we have received from the Lord and others. The prayers and encouragement of friends like you around the world are high on our gratitude list.

We want to resist the temptation to become self-absorbed during this ordeal, by being intentional about cultivating thankfulness—knowing that He is worthy of our praise—no matter what—and that gratitude produces the sweet fruit of joy and peace.

May we daily claim and rejoice in His promises, among them:

“The LORD gives strength to his people;
the LORD blesses his people with peace.”
(Psalm 29:10-11)

 Heaven rules.

  • Marcie Brown : This morning after an extended time in prayer and the Word, I felt impressed to suggest that you consider taking communion daily. The Lord directed me to do this many months ago as I too was facing several health issues and I cannot tell you the difference it has made in my life. I take it with matzo and grape juice and as I partake of that which represents His broken body, I pray, "Lord, as I partake of that which represents Your broken body, I ask that You would apply it to every area of brokenness and need in me." Then I finish it off with the juice which represents His blood and pray regarding any need for healing or deliverance in me." In doing this with an open, yet contrite heart, I literally have watched Him transform me from the inside out. There's nothing like His transforming power to do what no man or doctor can do!

  • Stan Gundry : Robert, just today I learned about what has been going on with you, and I have just completed reading through all of the upddate messages. You may recall that about a year ago I mentioned to you that Pat was on a journey similar to the one you are now on. She still is still on that journey. Through all of this over the last 18 months it has been a great comfort to know that God's people far and wide have been praying for her. Everytime someone mentions to me that they have been praying for hPat, I tell her, and the answer is always the same, "I know, I can tell. I am so thankful." As of today, my name is added to the vast host around the world praying for you and Nancy.

The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed. Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever." God gave me Philippians 4:6-7 as my life verses 42 years ago when my husband was suddenly killed in a car accident. I have learned over the years that “with thanksgiving” part of the verse is key to the “peace that passes understanding”. You have taught thanksgiving and gratitude over the years and now you are living it out beautifully before our eyes. Praise the Lord for how He is working through all of this.

We will be the lifter of your arms in this fight. Nancy, I have been an avid reader of your books and Bible studies over the years. Mr. Wolgemuth was the Director of the department of Thomas Nelson that I worked in many, many (more than I care to say) years ago. It was one of my first jobs as a young adult. My desk was right outside his office and I watched his work ethic and integrity firsthand. It made a mark on me. I love your love story! I will continue to pray for complete healing.

  • Melissa Denton : HI- My husband just finished 10 months of chemo/radiation/surgery treatment for Esophageal Cancer. It will be very helpful for you to focus on the blessings along the way, what a great idea for your sun room. Each day is a gift, but now it is more real. There are lots of technical terms, jargon etc with any cancer. Take one step at a time and don't get ahead of yourselves. My DH was able to withstand all of the chemo with very manageable side affects. There are some great pre-chemo meds that make the really bad side affects not so bad. He didn't have any nausea, didn't loose his hair, was able to nap and finally was able to eat whatever he could, in order to put on weight. Prayers for you both, and the whole family. The love and support of our loved-ones was priceless!

  • Crystal Morla : Dear Nancy, Praying for Robert to persevere in health and spirit as he begins chemo treatments. Three years ago my mother (who was 80 years old) had a similar journey that included both chemo and some radiation for breast cancer. I remember some days of just praying and singing with her (even when she felt groggy) to encourage her. It was truly a sweet time to feel the Lord come near and comfort her (and us) as we sang songs like "It's so sweet to trust in Jesus" together. She is in full remission now and approaching her 83rd birthday this month by God's grace :) Thank you for giving us prayer topics for each day of Robert's care this week. In this season where you are his caregiver, may the Lord bless you to persevere as you serve Robert by the Lord's grace. "be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."--Eph 5:18b-20

  • Charissa Stegink : Praying for you and Robert this morning- for peace, joy and that you would continue to trust the One who keeps you trusting. Praying for a successful, smooth port surgery for Robert with no post op complications. Praying that the chemo would be effective with little side effects. Most of all I am praying that as Robert goes through chemo that this treasure- the beauty of the gospel- would be seen in his body (the jar of clay) and that MANY would see that this all surpassing power is God not him. We pray that God would use this “light and momentary affliction” to produce in Robert, you (Nancy) and many others, an eternal weight of glory that far outweighs them all and that you would continue to keep your eyes on what is eternal and on Jesus so you will not grow weary or faint hearted (2 Cor. 4:7-12, 16-18, Heb.12:1-3). May many see and hear and put their trust in the Lord through this affliction (Ps. 40:3). My husband and I are so thankful for Robert and you and have been blessed, encouraged and challenged by your ministry. Thank you for your faithfulness to Him. And thank you for letting us know how we can specifically be praying for Robert as he walks through treatment. This is helpful and we appreciate you letting us know how we can be interceding for you!

I do pray that the Lord would allow the chemo to do what it is suppose to do....kill cancer cells...but I pray fervently that the Lord would protect Roberts organs and keep him safe and as healthy through it all. I pray for all of you....Nancy and family, as you are Robert’s support and help. I pray that your focus would be our Faithful and loving Lord Jesus Christ. I pray this all in the Name of our precious Savior. Amen “He will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3

Billy Graham wrote "Nearing Home" when he was almost 93. Elisabeth Elliot started "Gateway to Joy" at 63 and for 13 years added that ministry to her very busy schedule. We will all be amazed at what God has planned for this chapter of your story. Every day He is being glorified through the two of you. Rest on Tuesday. Enjoy Missy. Praying in SC.
