Journal entry by Amanda Ramsey

One year ago today, Maverick rang the bell to end his chemotherapy journey. It was the hardest and scariest thing I’ve ever witnessed. He endured six rounds of high dose chemo/bone marrow transplant, our family was separated a lot - between splitting time with Ezra & Maverick in the hospital, we received so many prayers and support - with meals, finances, love.

We are so grateful that God sent us Dr. Shaikhouni (neurosurgeon), Dr. Lazow (neuro oncology) & the rest of his care team to help save his life. When we left the hospital on 4/5/23, Maverick (16 mos old) wasn’t eating, talking, walking or crawling. He has hit many milestones since then - he truly is a miracle. Recently, Dr. S told us that the part of his brain where the tumor was has dead tissue - this is also the part of the brain that controls speech. But let me tell you about my God! Maverick is talking in sentences, he can count to ten, he knows his ABCs (most of them 😜), he can sing “Jesus loves me” - he LOVES to talk!

It’s still not “easy.” Every 3 months when it’s time for scans & check ups, the fear is always there. Or if he falls and hits his head. Or if he gets sick.

Our family is so blessed by Maverick. He’s in his terrible twos (Ezra can attest to that), but he is so fun and smart and funny and happy! We look forward to all the adventures the future brings.

One of my favorite songs right now is “Faithfully” by Toby Mac.
“In my darkest hour, You met me
So quietly, so gently
You said You’d never leave
And You stood by Your word
So quietly, so gently
In all my pain, You met me
You said You’d never leave
And You stood by Your word

‘Cause when my world broke into pieces
You were there faithfully
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You made a way for me
I may never be the same man
But I’m a man who still believes
When I cried out to You, Jesus
You were there faithfully”
