Kara Siert and her fight against Osteo Sarcoma

In late July 2005 Kara began to have upper right arm pain, she hid this complaint from us at first as she knew it would result in a doctor's appointment and thus "shots". She started favoring her arm by mid-August...and mommy and daddy perplexed by this finally acted and on Aug 18th a X-ray revealed a mass on her upper right arm bone (the humerus). An MRI of the site the next week was indictitive of an Aneurysmal Bone Cyst. Initially it was thought that it was benign...my literature review revealed that in these rare bone cysts, a few, can be caused by a malignant source. I pushed and got the referral to get the cyst biopsied. This referral went to the Royal Orthopaedic in Birmingham England, Mr Grimer, a very experienced surgeon, did the test on the 28th of Sept. On Oct 4th we received the devastating news...Osteo Sarcoma...a very deadly cancer. It took 180 days of inpatient hospitalization over 9 1/2 months of intensive chemo, several weeks for complications, and the major surgery. The surgery took place about three months from the start of the chemo. Six months of chemo followed after the surgery. We did consider the States...but travel and delay of chemo weighed heavy on our hearts so we decided to stay in England. A phone call to an expert in Boston gave us confidence to stay in England with her Surgeon, who is one of the finest in the world. We think we could not do much better. Friends we have made here are supporting us. But this will (was) be a very long haul...it will be a tough, challenging road but with your prayers and support we will travel this journey knowing we are not alone.

Kara is currently 34 months post chemo and her chest X-rays thus far show no evidence of disease. Praise God! She has had four arm lengthenings of her titanium rod, one in Nov. 2006, one in April 2007, one in August 2007 and one in January 2008. We thank God every day that she is alive!

Kara made it through surgery yesterday! Praise the Lord for His faithfulness!! Thanks to all of you for praying! The surgeons had a difficult time removing the lead from Kara’s vein going to the heart due to many adhesions from being in over 7 1/2 years but they finally got it out. The surgery lasted longer than expected because of that. The lead was fractured in multiples places. We are grateful that Kara never received an inappropriate shock as a result of the bad lead.

We were able to be with Kara while they were prepping her for surgery from 6-7:30, then they took her away to begin putting her to sleep and adding more arterial lines. She had six more places they put in for added insurance in case things went badly removing the lead. We got word they were closing her up at 11:30 and finally got to see her around 2:45 after they moved her to a regular room.

She was quite tired, sore, thirsty, and feeling poorly when we saw her. John was eager to take on his duty as husband and nurse at her side. It was quite a nervous morning for all of us. Thank you to Mary, Susan, Amy and Steve who waited with us. By evening Kara was more alert and able to get in and out of bed with a little assistance. The doctor plans to release her today. Ward and I will go to the hospital mid morning to see how things are going and give John a break for lunch.

The doctors are hopeful that this new ICD and lead will last a long time. The ICD maybe 10 years, the lead maybe 20. That would be fantastic!

Kara will have the hard work of recovery and getting full use of her left arm back again. No lifting or driving for a few weeks, and no heavy lifting for six weeks.

Many, many thanks to all of you! I wish I could give each one of you a big hug! We feel your love and concern for our sweet daughter.

Love,
Linda and Ward
