Joan Marie’s Story

Site created on February 2, 2019

On January 10,  2019 while traveling for work in San Diego, Joan Marie suffered a brain aneurysm at work that caused a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage(Stroke) which resulted in a massive brain bleed and coma.  Joan Marie was taken by ambulance and admitted to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Scripps La Jolla hosputal. Seven coils were placed in Joan's brain to stop the bleed.  In addition,  two craniotomy's were needed to put drains on each side of Joan's head to drain blood off her brain. Joan Marie  was given a 4% survival rate.  She spent  the next 41 days in the Neuro ICU and survived this horrible ordeal.  Joan Marie is our miracle patient!  She was air lifted  via an air ambulance to the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Center in Sewickley, PA on 2/24/19.  Both our families reside in the Pittsburgh area and would assist with her care.  Joan Marie was there for approximately 10 days.  Unfortunately, Joan Marie suffered a serious seizure on 3/5/19, and was transported to the ICU at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA where she had a piece of infected bone removed from her skull.   Joan Marie spent another 14 days recovering from her seizure.  Joan Marie was then transported to West Penn Hospital in Pittsbugh to continue her rehabilitation.  Unfortunately, Joan Marie broke her right hip in a fall in her room and a rod and pin were placed in her hip on 5/12/19.  Joan Marie was finally discharged on 6/25/19.   Outside of 5 days, Joan Marie was hospitalized from 1/10/19 thru 6/25/19.  West Penn Hospital is in the Allegheny Hospital Network which resulted in a seamless and integrated transition of her care.  Joan Marie continues fighting hard and making  incremental progress. We pray that God will restore her to fullness of Health. 🙏🏻Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.
