Ashley Abernathy

Welcome to my Web Page. I am a 16 year old girl who was diagnosed at age 4 with Leukemia(ALL). I went through 2 1/2 years of chemo. I relapsed in Oct. 1999, at age 9, and went through 2 1/2 years of chemo again. I have had 5 years of chemo altogether. I'm currently 4 1/2 years off chemo. I only go now every 6 months for check ups. I'm thankful for my doctors, nurses, child life and everyone that has taken care of me.

Wow, it's been a long time since I updated. Ashley has had a lot to happen since my last update.

On December 30th, she had to be rushed to the ER at Gaston Memorial. She had a really bad pain in her right side and couldn't stop vomiting. We got her there about 5:00 a.m. and it was 3:00 p.m. before they could totally stop the vomiting. She had a kidney stone and a bladder infection. I took her that Tuesday to see an Urologist. He did outpatient surgery on her the following day. The stone had just passed into her bladder but her ureter tube was restricted so he put in a stent for two weeks. She went back and had xrays done and the stent removed but her tube was still restricted. The Urologist wanted her back in February to do an IVP and check it again. It was fine on the re-check. She goes back in 6 months for a check up. She also got the flu in February which knocked her down a while. Took her about 10 days to get to feeling better. Her Pediatrician checked for Mono and Strep Throat, then said "well let's check for the flu". But she is well physically.

She missed a good bit of school but made up all her work. She was worried about her grades but she did fine there too. She has chorus competition tomorrow. All the schools from Gaston County and vicinity will be competing. She's in the women's chorus. They have a really good group so it will be exciting tomorrow. Next Thursday, we leave for our trip to New York. We went for the meeting Monday night and got our final itinerary. We ride all night Thursday and get there Friday morning around 9:00. We go to Times Square, Warner Bros. Studio store, MTV Studios, Virgin Records Megastore, Rockefeller Center, sightseeing with a tour guide from NYC, etc. on Friday. Then on Saturday we go for more sightseeing, stroll down 5th avenue, see the Trump Towers, check out Tiffanys, FAO Schwartz, and visit central park. Then we go to the broadway show Phantom of the Opera at 1:30. Then have dinner and go back and see the broadway show Tarzan. That will be one busy day. On Sunday, we go to Battery Park to visit The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Have lunch there also. Then break into groups and have a full day of sightseeing. We have dinner that evening at Bubba Gumps and then after dinner we go visit the Empire State Building. We'll ride up to the observation deck for a beautiful view of the city at night. Then Monday, we head home. I know it will be a lot of fun. I just hope I can keep up. Each chaperone that goes is responsible for about 6 or 7 teenagers. But their good kids so it should go smoothly. My mom is going with us. She's just hoping she can keep up, lol. She's already planning on spending Tuesday after we get back sleeping. At least the kids don't have to perform so we don't have to keep up with their formal attire. They can just have fun this trip. Ashley is sooooo excited. She knew last year that they may get to go to NYC. Then Mrs. B worked it out and told them they were going. Ashley didn't want to be that far from home by herself(imagine that) so she wanted me to go. You know she had to really twist my arm, just kidding. I've never been either so I'm as excited as she is. Granny has been but she's going back to see it with Ashley.

Well, I better go for now. It feels like I wrote a book. I'll update after we get back and let everyone know how it goes in the big apple. Hope you all are doing good. Take care. Rena
