Journal

Nichole has been doing very well this summer despite pretty much not going anywhere. She and Lorraine went to a movie and I think they both enjoyed it. Nichole still wants to go shopping, so we will send her when we can get someone to take her. Summer school is over, so Lorraine has made her last visit. They both really enjoyed being with each other.

Well, as for the augmentative communication device, Nichole finally chose the DynaVox. She made it very clear, so we have begun the paperwork process to get it filed through Medicaid. Currently we have one that is on loan from DynaVox that she is thoroughly enjoying.

We have thought long and hard about next school year, and after the great summer she had with the Lorraine, along with her intense interest in communicating with her device, we have decided to take Nichole from Tupelo High School and move her to the county school where Lorraine teaches. Lorraine is very knowledgeable about AAC and there's another student in her room that uses one. We are having an IEP meeting this coming week to discuss with the school about the change of placement. We want to make sure that this is a one year deal and that we would still get the materials from Tupelo High School for her English and Social Studies (History). We will study this with her at home. This is a very big deal that we thought and prayed hard about. We would appreciate all of your prayers on this matter.

Nichole has had a problem for the last two weeks with her gut. Basically, she has not had any "real" bowel movement for almost 2 weeks. Last Sunday, after giving her laxatives for several days, she began throwing up on a Sunday night. (It would happen when the doctor's office is closed.) So, Valerie took her to the ER to see if there was a small bowel obstruction that could be extremely serious. After many hours in the ER, they determined it was in the large bowel and after calling her pediatrician, they decided to let Valerie bring Nichole home with a new prescription to keep her from throwing up.

So, we are asking everyone to pray for poop. I bet most of you have never had to pray for that before, but with Nichole's medical history, this is very important. The date for the IEP is not firm, but please pray for that to go well and everything worked out that is best for Nichole.

We have started a new Caringbridge page that we will be updating from now on. Go to http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/nicholemaples for future updates. You can also use the link on the bottom of this page to get there now.

Thanks for all your prayers,
Doug
