Celebration of My LIFE

Austin Luke

Born: May 18, 2004

Austin Luke Bean ...Earth Angel

Austin Luke was born on May 18th at 6:00 in the evening. He is the youngest child of seven and the second son. Within a few hours, Austin was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and T21 (Down Syndrome) By the next morning, Austin was in critical condition and rushed by ambulance to Egelston Children's Hospital. His heart defect was diagnosed as Tetralogy of Fallot (basically a 3 chambered heart, small pulmonary valve, misplaced aorta and enlarged atrium muscle.) At six days old, Austin underwent open heart surgery for a complete TOF repair. Although Austin will have heart surgery in his future...he continues to grow by leaps and bounds. By the Grace of God - Austin has been well for the last year following his surgery. He is the joy of our lives. We have received notes of sympathy and condolences as well as congratulations on the birth of our baby boy. But let me tell you a secret...what seemed a tragedy is in reality a blessing. Every day, God reveals his love to us through our youngest child. And we continue to pray for complete healing for this special son he has sent us. On the morning he was born, God reminded me of this verse. Jeremiah 29:11-13 "For I know the plans I have for you saith the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
Join us as we glory in God's love and blessing in our lives.

Austin wore a helmet to help adjust the bones in his face and skull. His head became 'lopsided' from being on his back following surgery.

Journal

Austin is happy. And life seems very normal these days. He goes to school everyday. Two days a week he and his sister, Rebecca, go to the Church pre-school. He is fully included with 14 other pre-schoolers. Ever day he goes, he brings home a lovely craft or project he has made for us. One the other days he goes to a special class at a pre-K in our county school system. I am amazed by what he is learning. He knows his letters, colors and numbers to 10. Not bad for any four year old. He works on a touch screen computer and loves his small class of only 5 students and two teachers.

Austin loves his family. He is very close to all of his siblings. He even shares a room with his big brother Hunter. It stays in a perpetual mess.. but we are working on it.

Austin's heart is strong.. we still go to the cardiologist every six months and there is no change. We can't help but hold our breath a bit. Even after the repair at seven days old, Austin's heart will need additional surgery. But we wait, until the heart tells us it is time.

We had a family vacation in August and a wedding in November. Austin loved Maine.. wasn't too thrilled with the wedding.

You may remember Kennedy.. the one in the teddy bear pictures. She was Kristin's flower girl...

all of the siblings were in the wedding. It was a fairy tale event.
