Carter was born July 12, 2001 at Toronto’s Mount Sinia Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. He was we thought born perfectly healthy. Little did we know that he was born with a genetic metabolic storage disorder known as Hurler syndrome, and that this disease would shape the course of his life. Since this disease is a progressive disorder Carter was not diagnosed until he was 10 months old. The only treatment for this disease is a Bone Marrow Transplant, unfortunately there are great risks associated with BMT’s.

Carter was admitted to Toronto’s Sick Children’s Hospital on November 4, 2002 to get his BMT. He seemed to have won his battle against the dangers of BMT’s and was doing well with only a few minor issues delaying his release from hospital. Then about 95 days post BMT he developed some breathing issues and was sent down to the CCU. Ten days later on March 1, 2003, Carter earned his angel wings and joined his hurler friends who have also fallen to this terrible disease.

REMEMBERING

Go ahead and mention my child,
The one that died, you know.
Don’t worry about hurting me further.
The depth of my pain doesn’t show.
Don’t worry about making me cry,
I’m already crying inside.
Help me to heal by releasing
The tears that I try to hide.
I’m hurt when you just keep silent,
Pretending he didn’t exist,
I’d rather you mention my child,
Knowing that he has been missed.
You asked me how I was doing,
I say “pretty good” or “fine”.
But healing is something ongoing,
I feel it will take a lifetime.

Hey Little Man.

Just wanted to let you know how much we all Love and miss you. We hope you have a really good time at your birthday party with all your angel friends. We wish you were with us, but we know one day we will be together again.
